Tianna Guy had to settle for a silver medal against hometown favourite Katherine Veras when both women clashed in the 60 kg final of the La VI Copa Internacional de Boxeo Regil Ventura in the Dominican Republic on Friday night.
This was after Veras was awarded a 5-0 win on points with all five judges scoring in the former’s favour.
Carmen Velez and Juan Calos Reyna both scored 30-27 in favour of Velras, while the trio of Daniel Morel, Carlos Urena and Yordanis Fabian had identical scores of 29-28 in the hometown fighter’s favour.
The loss to Vera was her second in as many meetings, after she was also beaten in their clash via a split decision at the Independence Cup in 2024.
On Thursday, Guy secured her spot in the final when she won via a 5-0 unanimous decision against El Salvador’s Johana Nicol Martinez, while Veras won on points against Helane Perez.
The bouts for Guy were part of her preparations for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Santo Domingo in July.
With five wins in 33 fights, Guy is eager to build her resume as the road to the Los Angeles Olympics approaches. Her CAC Games qualification was successful despite a period of under-preparation, but Cox has since had the time to ensure an improved performance for July.
According to her coach, Reynold Cox, she is not at her 100 per cent best at the moment, but actually they are working towards having her at her peak in July for the CAC Games.
