Alzarri Joseph is likely to join Mumbai Indians' injury bench after hurting his bowling arm during Saturday's clash against Rajasthan Royals. ESPNcricinfo understands that Joseph has a tear in his right arm, which he dislocated while diving on the field, and will miss the remainder of the tournament.
Joseph himself was a replacement for New Zealand's Adam Milne, who didn't arrive after suffering from a swollen heel. Milne had been bought at the December auction for for INR 75 lakhs (US $104,000 approx). As per the rules, the replacement also gets the same amount.
This has been a difficult year for Joseph already. In February, he lost his mother in the middle of his maiden home Test in Antigua, where he'd dismissed Joe Denly off the first delivery. He opted to play the Test, displaying a lot of character in West Indies' series win against England.
Joseph's IPL sojourn lasted a week. He announced himself on April 6 spectacularly by picking the IPL's best bowling figures of 6 for 12 in 3.4 overs to deliver an away win against against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His performance is the best bowling figures in the IPL, breaking the eleven-year-old record held by Sohail Tanvir (6 for 14). Three days later, Joseph hit the winning runs against Kings XI Punjab in his first home game. However, he had just bowled two overs in which he had given 22 runs, going wicketless.
On Friday, before his fall, Joseph had already endured a hard beating, once again going wicketless and leaking 53 runs in three overs. Having played half the number of games, Mumbai will be keen to find an immediate replacement for Joseph.
Mumbai play Royal Challengers at home on Monday before travelling for four away games.
Paul bowls Capitals to victory, Russell misfires in KKR loss
KOLKATA, India – Keemo Paul produced a sensational spell of fast bowling to spur the Delhi Capitals to a spectacular 39-run victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
SCORES: Delhi Capitals 155 for 7 (Iyer 45, Khaleel 3-30) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 116 (Warner 51, Bairstow 41, Rabada 4-22, Paul 3-17) by 39 runs.
Paul grabbed three wickets for 17 runs from his four overs to help trigger a dramatic collapse as Hyderabad were dismissed for 116 in pursuit of the Capitals’ total of 155 for seven from their 20 overs.
Led by a half-century opening stand between David Warner and Jonny Bairstow, Hyderabad seemed to be cruising at 72 without loss inside of ten overs.
But once Paul, who was voted Man-of-the-Match, accounted for Bairstow’s scalp, it all went downhill for Hyderabad.
Keemo Paul (left) took three wickets to lead the Capitals to a shocking win
He followed that up by dismissing captain Kane Williamson for three and then Ricky Bhui for seven, to leave the score 101 for three.
From thereon, Kagiso Rabada ran through the middle order claiming four scalps, including the prized wicket of Warner for the top score of 51, as Hyderabad lost their remaining seven wickets for just 15 runs.
So embarrassing was Hyderabad’s batters that only Bhui made more than the five extras which were conceded by the Capitals.
In another match, both Sunil Narine and Andre Russell failed with the bat as the Kolkata Knight Riders went down by five wickets to the Chennai Super Kings.
SCORES: Chennai Super Kings 162 for 5 (Raina 58*, du Plessis 24, Narine 2-19) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 161 for 8 (Lynn 82, Tahir 4-27) by five wickets.
Opening the batting, Narine made just two from seven balls, while Russell hit two boundaries in his knock of 10, as KKR could only muster 161 for eight in their 20 overs.
Chennai then got up to 162 for five with two balls to spare, thanks hugely to an unbeaten 58 from Suresh Raina and 31 not out from Ravindra Jadeja.
Narine did manage to claim two wickets for 19 runs from his four overs, while Russell’s solitary over went for 16 runs.
