Another phenomenal performance from Onella Jack-Hill for this season saw her earn the “Most Valuable Player” (MVP) award of the Courts All Sectors Netball League for a second consecutive year.
The Fire Service utility player was presented with the top accolade by T&T Netball Association President Dr Patrica Butcher at the leagues' closing ceremony on Saturday evening at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua.
“I am elated,” said the soft-spoken Jack-Hill, who responded similarly last season when she was honoured with the same award. “We played as a team, everyone came out and worked hard I must say and we came out victorious.”
Again the fire officer, who was named on the senior All-Star team, was one of the key ingredients in helping Fire sweep all titles in the Premiership Division including the League, Steve Sarjeant Challenge, Divisional knockout, Fast5 and Opening Day knockout competitions.
So too, her Fire and All-Star teammate Simone Morgan, who was the MVP for the team in the six-team division. The leading players for the other respective teams were Crystal-Ann George for Defence Force, Ayana Russell (Las Lomas), Stacy Pilgrim (Police), Kielle Connelly of Police Youth Club (PYC) and Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) Sparks’ Thema Moses.
Jack-Hill, a national defender, was busy at the awards ceremony as she was nominated by her teammates to collect the respective trophies for her champion team but was amazed when her name was specifically called for a shooting award.
“I was surprised by winning the individual shooters’ award and I was very elated,” said a smiling Jack-Hill as she showed the plaque with her name written on the surface.
She had the best shooting average for the season in the Premiership Division with 64.13 per cent, beating out regular shooters Aquila Blugh of UTC (63.57) and Police’s Jeselle Navarro (63.41).
Jack-Hill’s contribution helped Fire cop the team’s best shooting average award and later she made her way back to the presentation floor when she collected the prize for best centre-court. Collecting the award for the best defensive player was George.
After a busy season, Jack-Hill and her fellow national teammates have no plans of relaxing as their focus remains on the upcoming Netball World Cup in England.
“Right now training hard as usual. We are working on many things with one of the best coaches Wesley ‘Pepe’ Gomes. He has a plan so we are coming out to training and working. We have a goal,” said Jack-Hill.
In all, it was an exciting season for each player in the various division and the addition of the men’s player in the Premiership category, added value to intensity to the 29th edition of the ASNL, who had Esmond Forde, Member of Parliament for Tunapuna and Patrice Charles, Director of Physical Education and Sports in the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs on hand to present awards .
“The men contributed in a big way. They helped in the shooters’ area and the defensive area,” said Jack-Hill of her teammates Ronald Phipps, Martinez Holder and Andrew Johnson.
Her other Fire teammates were Garbrel Selman, Ayana Hamlet, Jellene Richardson, Fiona Holder, Daystar Swift and Sanya Jarvis. They were coached by Joel Young-Strong and their physiotherapist Donna John ensured that they were the fittest on the court for each match of the three-month-long competition.
In the individual awards presented in the other divisions, Bermudez’s Makeda De Freitas was the best shooter with 80.67 per cent in the Championship category. Her teammate Anteneille Charles was the best centre-court and TSTT’s Chantael Perry-McEwen was the best defender.
Taking respective honours in the Alternative Division were Bermudez’s Nakaliah Daniel (72.97), Tricia Patron (TT Post) and Tamiah Hernandez of Bermudez.
