Josiah Joseph of Powergen and Crusaders’ Chloe Fraser claimed the under-19 boys’ and girls’ singles titles when the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association (T&TTTA) National Age-Group Championship ended at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua on Sunday.
In a keenly anticipated Boys Under-19 singles final, Joseph outlasted fellow national youth player Malik Gopaul 14-16, 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, and 13-11.
Joseph served off his knockout phase by beating Nirav Basant 9-11, 11-5, 14-12, and 11-1 and then overcame Gabriel John 11-2, 5-11, 11-4, and 11-5 and Mateo Mollineau 10-12, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, and 11-8 in the semifinals, while Gopaul beat Kymani Holder 11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 9-11, and 11-7; Jonathan Cottoy 12-10, 11-4, 7-11, and 11-7; and Raees Elahi 11-9, 11-7, and 11-5 en route to the final.
Fraser had a much easier time in securing the Girls Under-19 singles title, humbling Jordan Thong of Queen’s Park Cricket Club 11-3, 11-3, and 11-5 in the decider.
In the semifinals, Fraser dominated Priya Rambally 11-1, 11-2, and 11-0, and Thong defeated Elizabeth Rajah 11-8, 11-2, and 11-6.
Sekel Mc Intosh and Cottoy won the Under-19 Boys’ doubles final via a come-from-behind, 9-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7 triumph over Gopaul and Basant.
In the semis, McIntosh and Cottoy topped Joshua Bhim and Jared Simon 11-3, 11-7, and 11-7, while Gopaul and Basant outlasted Holder and Luke Govia 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, and 12-10.
In the Under-19 Mixed Doubles, McIntosh was also in winners’ row after he paired with Thong to beat Gopaul and Lyllana Boodhan 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, and 11-6 in the final.
McIntosh and Thong won their semifinal, 11-5, 11-3, and 11-9 against Basant and Chloe Fraser, while Gopaul and Boodhan beat Govia and Hidayah Mohammed 11-5, 11-7, 2-11, and 11-9.
Mollineau enjoyed much better fortune in the Boys’ Under-15 age group thanks to his 11-6, 6-11, 11-6, and 11-1 beating of Ethan Mohammed in an all-Crusaders clash.
Earlier, Mollineau had a bye in the last 16, followed by wins over Zayder Sagramsingh (11-13, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9) and Jared Simon (11-8, 11-4, 11-7), while Ramcharan was also gifted a first-round bye before he defeated Jaydon Ottley (11-4, 11-5, 11-3) and Daniel Bhim (24-22, 5-11, 11-2, 11-6).
The Girls’ Under-15 title was decided via a three-player round-robin with RTTC’s Elizabeth Rajah beating Zuri Radge Coomar of Powergen 11-2, 11-7, and 11-6 and QPCC’s Hidayah Mohammed 11-7, 11-5, and 11-7 for the top spot.
Mohammed ended as the runner-up after his win over Radge Coomar 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 8-11, and 11-4.
Carenage Blasters’ Zaydan Sagramsingh lifted the Boys Under-13 singles crown with a hard-fought 11-6, 16-13, 15-6, 11-16, and 16-14 defeat of Powergen’s Samir Radge Coomar.
Sagramsingh served off the main draw with a comfortable 11-4, 11-8, 11-7 win against Aarva Basant of Crusaders before he beat the other Basant brother, Rivaan Basant, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4 in the last four while Radge Coomar rallied past Trent Sampath 11-7, 11-2, 9-11, 11-2 and Tristan Soomarie 11-7, 13-11, 11-4.
Sagramsingh later paired with Soomarie to beat Yash Maharaj and Radge Coomar 14-12, 11-5, and 11-3 in the doubles final.
This was after Sagramsingh and Soomarie beat Soren Ramesar and Damian Smith 11-5, 11-3, and 11-3 in their semifinal while Radge Coomar and Maharaj stopped the Basant brothers 11-8, 11-7, and 11-7.
Powergen’s Zuri Radge Coomar secured the Girls Under-13 title with an entertaining 7-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8 defeat of Queen’s Park Cricket Club’s Everleigh McKenna.
Radge Coomar had a quarterfinal bye before he bettered QPCC’s Hidayah Mohammed 11-5, 12-10, 9-11, and 11-7, while Mc Kenna also had a first-round bye followed by an 11-7, 13-11, 11-13, and 11-8 win against Ishta Ramdatt of CCTTC in her semifinal.
McKenna had much better fortune in the doubles as she combined with Mohammed to defeat Harley Ramsear and Amvi Ramsoondar 11-9, 11-2, and 11-3 and Amira Kissoon and Kayleigh Ramcharan 11-2, 11-5, and 11-4.
Harley and Ramsoondar ended as runners-up after beating Kissoon and Ramcharan 12-10, 9-11, 11-7, and 11-5.
In the mixed doubles Under-13 age-group final, Samir Radge Coomar and his sister Zuri Radge Coomar won in straight sets, 11-6, 11-7, and 11-2, over Aarav Basant and Kyziah Dates.
The Radge Coomar pairing won their quarterfinal over Suren Ramesar and Amvi Ramsoondar 11-1, 11-2, and 11-3 before whipping Rivaan Basant and Kayla Fanan 11-4, 11-2, and 11-8 in the semis, while Aarav Basant and Dates won against Damian Smith and Amira Kissoon 11-6, 11-9, and 11-7; and Saif Sirkissoon and Ishta Ramdatt won 11-6, 11-4, and 11-9.
Powergen’s Samir Radge Coomar got the better of Crusaders’ Rivaan Basant in their Boys Under-11 decider: 9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-9.
In the semifinals, Radge Coomar brushed aside Warrenville’s Ameal Rajcoomar 11-5, 11-4, and 11-5, and Basant ousted teammate Ashvin Singh 15-17, 11-2, 11-9, and 11-6.
Queen’s Park Cricket Club’s Everleigh McKenna stormed past NGS’s Gabriella Basso 13-11, 11-3, and 11-8 in their Girls’ Under-11 championship match.
McKenna first beat Kimaya Chiddick 11-3, 11-4, and 11-2 in the quarterfinals, followed by an 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6 triumph over NGS’s Johanna Lawrence in the semis, while Basso eased past Tunapuna Hindu Schools’ Kayleigh Ramcharan 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 and Cunupia Crew’s Ishta Ramdatt 14-12, 9-11, 4-11, 12-10, 11-9 in her main draw matches.
In the Boys’ Under-9 round-robin, Ashvin Singh of Crusaders won the five-player round-robin series with courtesy victories against Zayn Sitram (11-2, 11-5, 11-3), Viren Bharat (11-1, 11-2, 11-1), Liam Hosein (11-2, 11-3, 11-3), and Kavvir Kantansingh (11-4, 11-3, 11-3).
Tunapuna Hindu Schools’ Amvi Ramsoondar secured the Girls Under-9 title via her 15-13, 14-16, 9-11, 11-9, and 11-8 battling win over her clubmate Kayleigh Ramcharan.
In the semifinals, Ramsoondar beat another clubmate, Amira Kissoon, 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 7-11, and 11-6, and Ramcharan defeated fellow THS player Zaria Sankar 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, and 11-2.
Earlier in the group stage, Ramsoondar beat Sankar 11-6, 11-5, and 13-11 and Kayla Fana 11-6, 11-6, and 11-6, while Sankar overcame Fanan 11-7, 3-11, 11-9, and 11-5 in Group One, and in Group Two, Ramcharan defeated Kissoon 11-7, 11-8, and 11-3 and Serala Sirkissoon 11-5, 11-3, and 11-8, with Kissoon defeating Sirkissoon 10-12, 11-3, 11-7, and 13-11 in the other encounter.
