Eighty-Three horses have taken entry for the Carib Brewery Day at the Races on Republic Day (Tuesday 24th September) in T&T. Of the total, eight are juveniles expecting to make their debut at the Arima Race Club (ARC) Day 30 programme which is expected to attract a large crowd at the Santa Rosa Park, Arima.
The Blue Riband event - the Carib Brewery Derby will carry a purse of 238,530 and will be run off over 2000 metres with the Glenn Mendez trained Juice Man expected to be an overwhelming favourite.
Champion jockey Ricky Jadoo will attempt to win his fifth Derby at the age of 53 and what a birthday present he can have on Republic Day.
John O'Brien attacks the Grade Three - Diamond Stakes over 1350 metres with his powerful trio headed by General JN. Rico Hernandez will be in the saddle and General JN will be very difficult to beat. O'Brien also has Thisonesforron and Pauseforacoors in the nine-horse field. Kerron Khelawan will ride Thisonesforron while Brian Boodransing will be aboard the latter.
Champion trainer Glenn Mendez also has a three-pronged attack in the event and Whisper Light which showed a return to form last time out could well make it three wins in this event. He will be ridden by apprentice Sven Balroop. Valorous is the choice of Jadoo while Caesar Country will be ridden by Kiran Razack.
Harriram Gobin will be looking to his charge Nuclear Power to lift the Diamond Stakes honour with Kimal Santo in the plate. Stablemates Stockyard and Master of War round off the competitive field.
The two-year-olds will face the starter for the first time for the 2019 season when they come out to race over 900 metres in the opening event. As is now customary trainer Harold Chadee holds the 'whip hand' with his six charges among the eight horses entered. The Jamaican bred American Traveller which will be ridden by Wilmer Galviz is expected to be the overwhelming favourite.
Post time for the first event is 12:00noon.
