Amiee Le Blanc of Marlins Swim Club wrote her name into the books when she broke the record in the girls’ 11 & over 1,500 metres freestyle event on Friday night of the National Open Long Course Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva.
She did not, however, make the qualifying time for the Central American and Caribbean Confederation (CCCAN) Swim Championships in August in El Salvador.
The record was set by Shania David back in 2013 when she swam to a blistering 19 minutes and 38.36 seconds. Le Blanc, contesting the final of the event, produced a jaw-dropping performance that saw her touch the wall at the finish in 19:34.00.
She was the only swimmer to have achieved such a feat on the night. Her gold medal finish was followed by second-place Taylor Marchan (20:35.95) with the bronze medal going to Zara Persico after stopping the clock at 20:42.10.
Also Friday, Nikoli Blackman swam to victories in three ‘A’ finals—the boys’ 11 & over 200m individual medley in 2:14.30, the 100m freestyle in 51.71 and the 50m backstroke by posting a time of 27.11.
Also, there were ‘A’ final wins for Zarek Wilson, clocking 55.13 in the 11 & over the 100-metre butterfly and Maidan Edwards who touched the wall at 1:10.92 in the girls’ 100m butterfly.
Ornella Walker and Aiden Nixon were also in the winner’s row of the 50m backstroke ‘A’ final for boys and girls respectively.
Yesterday, Blackman led a list of regular names who will be in contention for the CCCAN championships.
Blackman, who led the country’s medal haul of 54 medals, which consisted of 22 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze at the Carifta Games over the Easter holidays, booked his places in the ‘A’ finals of the boys 11 & over 200m freestyle event by topping the preliminaries in a time of 1:56.09.
He was followed into second position by Zachary Anthony (2:02.66) with Riquelio Joseph (2:05.31) in third, all set to contest the A final for swimmers registering the top eight times.
The ‘B’ finals for swimmers coming ninth to 16th positions, will be led by Josiah Changar (2:10.58) and includes Blaine Sobrian, Alejandro Agard and Levi Smith, among others.
Blackman will also pursue a qualifying berth in the 11 & over 50m butterfly event after finishing second behind Christian Awah. The latter touched the wall at the finish line first, posting a time of 24.51 with Blackman close behind in 25.66, while Zarek Wilson, another of the T&T swim aces, was in third position in 25.71 seconds. All will contest the ‘A’ finals.
Blackman, a three-time First Citizens Sports Foundation’s Junior Sportsman of the Year nominee, will also go after the ‘A’ final in the 11 & over 50m breaststroke event. This after he disposed of the eight-man field to win in 30.70, finishing ahead of second-place Zackary Gresham (31.52) and Riquelio Joseph (31.83).
Meanwhile, Cherelle Thompson will also go after a CCCAN spot in the girls’ 11 & over 50m butterfly after leading a close dash to the finish in the preliminaries. The T&T Olympian who represented the country in the 50m freestyle in Tokyo, Japan, touched the wall yesterday in a time of 29.11.
She finished ahead of Amari Ash who clocked 30.01, to also earn a place in the final, alongside Tilly Collymore in third at 30.27.
Natania Edwards in ninth position will still have a chance for a CCCAN spot, along with the other swimmers in the ‘B’ final, should they be able to splash to the qualifying standard.
Ornella Walker will also go after honours in the girls’ 11 & over 100m backstroke following her 1:06.93-second win in the preliminaries, yesterday. The result means she will contest the ‘A’ final, lining up alongside second-place Alyssa Reid 1:13.44 and third Kiara Goodridge (1:14.51).
