Twenty-five-year-old T&T jockey Lenny Seecharan, who fell on Tuesday at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, Canada, has shown signs of improvement after being given the all-clear from the trauma Doctor to go home.
Seecharan, who has ridden 15 winners so far for the year and looks set to have his most successful year in his career, fell off the trainer John Snow's Arbee's Run in the fifth race over One Mile and a Sixteenth on Tuesday night.
Arbee's Run was well supported in the betting and after being off the pace early, was making ground on the rail to deliver his challenge when Arbee's Run unseated Seecharan. The T&T jockey had to be taken to hospital immediately following the mishap.
His twin brother Learie, who was riding the event saw when his brother went down and when he pulled up his mount Shanghai Posse, on the back-straight after the race, handed his horse over to the pony girl and ran to Lenny. The race was won by the 1-2 favourite My College Fund.
After medical examination and tests were done, there were no broken bones but he suffered some swelling in the head. Lenny has since been sent home.
Guardian Media spoke to Lenny's father Learie Secharan (Snr) on Sunday and he intimated that Lenny has shown improvement and he hopes he continues in that trend. Seecharan (Snr) said that he has had a sleepless week since Tuesday when he got the news.
He continued, "Lenny has left the hospital after a series of tests were done. The X-Rays on his lungs showed some laceration on them. However, the trauma Doctor gave him the green light to go home. However, he will have to return to have checkups on his lungs and head for a while. But you know Lenny is a fighter. The doctors have told him that it will be a while before he returns to training. In fact, the first thing out of his mouth was when he can start back training.
"The doctors have stated that he needs a lot of sleep, so his brain can re-group. Clearly, his memory is returning and over time his memory should return fully. I am hoping that the worst is behind him. I really want to thank everyone for their prayers, they are definitely being heard.
"At present, I am on no sleep and I am an emotional mess but God is good. I expect Lenny to be back soon and in the interim, I hope Learie can continue his winning ways and keep T&T's flag flying.
Two weeks ago, his twin-brother Learie also fell at the Hastings Racecourse and had to be hospitalised. However, Learie (Jnr) rebounded and won his fourth race last Tuesday night when he rode Richards Command to victory for trainer Julie Wicks.
He has been booked to three horses on Tuesday night. His mounts are Country Cowboy, Blueberry Honey and Gottcha Promise. On Wednesday, he will also have three mounts, Baby Grand, Appellant and Harvest Day.
Let us all continue to pray for Lenny's speedy recovery.
