Shakeem McKay and his Louisiana State University (LSU) teammates qualified for the medal round of the men's 4x400 metres relay at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division One Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon on Wednesday.
On the first day of action, LSU was second in the first of three heats of the preliminaries in three minutes and 02.95 seconds (3:02.95). McKay of local club, Abilene Wildcats, ran the second leg recording a 45.21-second split. LSU's was the sixth-fastest of the 24 teams. The top nine finishers qualified for today's final. At last year's NCAA Final, McKay's LSU 4x400m squad was eliminated in the preliminaries.
Minnesota's Devin Augustine bowed out in the men's 200m preliminaries. The Point Fortin New Jets sprinter was sixth in heat one in 20.54 seconds. However, the 2019 Carifta boys' Under-17 100m gold medallist was 17th overall, with only the top nine moving into the medal round.
Last night, three local women's athletes were to contest the women's 4x100m preliminaries for their respective schools. Akilah Lewis with Ole Miss was to run in heat one while Leah Bertrand's Ohio State and Taejha Badal's Texas State were set to be in heat three. Bertrand was scheduled to be back on the track for the women's 100m preliminaries in heat one. Rae-Anne Serville of the Univerity of South California (USC) was to line up in the women's 400m hurdles preliminaries in heat three.
The T&T quartet was seeking to advance to the finals set for Saturday.
Kelsey Daniel (Kaizen Panthers) of the University of Texas will vie for the men's triple jump title later today. Daniel, a former Carifta and Pan American Junior Games medallist, is a former Junior College champion as a student of New Mexico Community College.
