ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Matthew Nandu carved out a brilliant double century, while teenaged batsman Jonathan Van Lange scored a first-class century on debut as the Guyana Harpy Eagles made the West Indies Academy toil in the field on day three of their warmup match at the Antigua Recreation Ground on Tuesday.
Nandu scored a career-best 237 and Van Lange scored a fluent 133 to guide the Harpy Eagles to 655 for eight – an overall lead of 170 runs.
Resuming the day on 248 for three with Nandu on 110, the Academy reaped early success when leg spinner Zishan Motara dismissed Zeynul Ramsammy for just 14 with five runs added to the total.
His departure brought Van Lange to the crease and for the next three hours and forty minutes, the pair terrorised the Academy’s bowling attack in a mammoth 255-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Van Lange was the first to get to his milestone, scampering a single after a misfield by Motara at cover off the bowling of spinner Giovonte DePeiza, to reach his 100 off 122 balls.
Nandu followed soon after, reaching his double century by flicking Motara through midwicket for a single off 313 balls.
Motara eventually got the wicket of Van Lange, caught behind by the wicketkeeper after facing 165 balls and hitting 20 fours and one six, to make the score 508 for five.
Captain Rivaldo Clarke then brought Nandu’s marathon innings that spanned 13 minutes shy of 10 hours to an end by having him caught behind. In all he faced 361 balls and struck 29 fours.
Gudakesh Motie made 48 before being bowled by Nathan Edward and Motara completed his five-wicket haul by bowling Veerasammy Permaul for one.
Richie Looknauth ended the day unbeaten on 71 off 108 balls, with nine fours and one six.
Motara has so far taken 5-199.
