Iraq Thomas, who was ad­judged as the top sports per­son­al­i­ty for 2018 was one of 17 young peo­ple who was recog­nised for their con­tri­bu­tions to na­tion build­ing with awards when the Min­istry of Sports and Youth Af­fairs held its Na­tion­al Youth Awards Cer­e­mo­ny at the Hy­att Re­gency Ho­tel in Port-of- Spain on Sat­ur­day af­ter­noon.

Thomas, a crick­eter smashed the fastest T20 cen­tu­ry when he reached the feat in just 21 balls. The cer­e­mo­ny al­so cel­e­brat­ed young peo­ple, their ded­i­ca­tion to ser­vice and their com­mit­ment to ex­cel­lence marked 23 years since it was first in­tro­duced.

Awards were giv­en to young peo­ple for ex­celling in the fol­low­ing cat­e­gories: Youth Lead­er­ship and Ad­vo­ca­cy; Stu­dent Lead­er­ship; Ed­u­ca­tion; Youth Ac­tivism; En­tre­pre­neur­ship; Per­son­al Tri­umph; Youth Men­tor-ship; Most Im­proved Youth Group; Most Out­stand­ing Youth Group; Most Ef­fec­tive Youth Pro­gram; Arts and Cul­ture; Health and Well­ness; Agri­cul­ture; Me­dia; and Sport.

Min­is­ter of Sport and Youth Af­fairs, Sham­fa Cud­joe who is a prod­uct of T&T's youth move­ment re­marked, 'As we cel­e­brate to­day, we want to re­mind all our young peo­ple in T&T that the pow­er of the youth is nev­er to be un­der­es­ti­mat­ed'.
