T&T's Annie Alexander competing for the University of Tennessee (UT) dominated the women's field events at UT's Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee on Saturday. A huge toss of 16.62 metres won her gold in the Women's Shot Put event. Alexander's closest challenger was Tennessee's Aslynn Halvorson, who had a best throw of 13.09m. She then gave a mighty attempt of 54.55m to win the discus event, again far ahead to the field with second place finisher Jessie Harrison (Tennessee), managing a 46.13m effort. In a final tune-up before the NJCAA championships, Dellon Williams copped gold in both the Men's Long and Triple jump at the South Plains College (SPC) Invitational in Levelland, Texas also on Saturday.
The South Plains sophomore leaped 7.64m to take first place in the long jump and 16.04m in the Triple Jump, to claim the top spot. He has already made the qualifying marks in both events for the championships which is to be held in Hutchinson, Kansas on May 20-22. Three other T&T/South Plains athletes has also qualified for the top outdoor event including Quincy Wilson in both the Shot Put and Discus events, Kyron Blaise also in the Long Jump and Kervin Morgan (400m hurdles). Wilson also performed well at his school's invitational, winning gold in the Shot Put with a toss of 15.73m. He followed up with a third place finish in the Discus with a throw of 43.93.
Morgan's time of 55.58 seconds earned him fifth place in the 400m hurdles on the same day. In the Women's 100m, T&T sprinter Jeugniegia Cooke could only manage ninth place for her 13.26 effort for South Plains. In the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of North Texas, T'Keyah Dumoy of Florida International failed to advance in both the Women's 200 and 400m. She ran 25.04 to place 15th overall in the 200m and in heat two of the 400m she crossed the line in 58.20 to run 14th. Darnell Greig of North Texas qualified for the Men's 400m, running the fourth fastest time of 48.09. The final was scheduled for late yesterday.
