The John O'Brien trained Sweet Alex con­tin­ued the win­ning way of his sta­ble when mak­ing all the run­ning in yes­ter­day's fea­ture Stakes and Low­er Hand­i­cap, over 1,300 me­tres at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma. Sent off at the gen­er­ous price of 2-1, Sweet Alex was slammed out of the gates by for­mer cham­pi­on jock­ey Bri­an Hard­ing and nev­er saw an­oth­er ri­val. At the 600 me­tres mark­er, Filch­er went in­to sec­ond place, rel­e­gat­ing odds-on favourite, Bristling to third, as Storm Street moved up to join is­sue, with Cash It Back trail­ing.

How­ev­er, at the cor­ner Sweet Alex kept up the gal­lop and ran out a de­serv­ing win­ner by 1? 1/4 lengths, with Filch­er sec­ond and Storm Street third.

The dis­ap­point­ment of the race was the O'Brien trained colt, Bristling which fin­ished fourth af­ter his four month lay-off. Sweet Alex record­ed the time of 1:16.1 for the trip. The Jose William-Sam­ma­roo trained, Mon­te­jo showed that he con­tin­ues to thrive, when win­ning the Al­lowance Event over 1,750 me­tres. The Zan­im Meah-John owned three-year-old colt could not have been more im­pres­sive un­der Pavyln Badrie, scor­ing by 3 1/4 lengths in the time of 1:47.3 from Sonata's Melody, which was lat­er dis­qual­i­fied for com­ing in with the wrong weight.

Mon­te­jo will, no doubt, go on to bet­ter things and may be a Gold Cup can­di­date. Rid­ing ho­n­ours for the day were shared be­tween Bri­an Hard­ing and Pavlyn Badrie who each rode two win­ners. Train­ing ho­n­ours for the day fell to cham­pi­on train­er, John O'Brien who sad­dled two win­ners in Mike's Sug­ar and Sweet Alex. Rac­ing con­tin­ues next week at San­ta Rosa Park, when the $100,000 Stud Farm As­so­ci­a­tion Breed­er Stakes will be con­test­ed lo­cal­ly and the rich­est day in Horse Rac­ing world­wide - the Breed­er's Cup will be con­test­ed at Churchill Downs in Ken­tucky.
