Nicholas Paul did not make the qualifying mark for the 1-kilometre time trial at the UCI Elite Track World Championships at the Penalolen Velodrome in Santiago, Chile on Friday.
Needing to be among the top eight participants to earn qualifying berths, Paul finished way down the order at 12th in a time of 1:00.206 seconds.
Not surprisingly, Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen topped the qualifying list in a time of 57.681, going at a speed of 62.412 km/h. Paul had, just the day before, fallen short of a place in the men’s keirin final by crossing the finish line in fifth in semifinal heat one.
Lavreysen, a five-time Olympic gold medallist, was followed in the second position by Joseph Truman of Great Britain and Lavreysen’s countryman Jeffrey Hoogland, who executed at a speed of 61.217 km/h to seal the third-place spot.
The other qualifiers are fourth, Ryan Tayte (Australia), 59.304; fifth, Henric Hackmann (Germany), 59.721; sixth, David Peterka (Czech Republic), 59.870; seventh, David Fontalvo (Colombia), 59.879; and eighth, Kirill Kurdidi (Kazakhstan), 59.986.
T&T’s Akil Campbell also contested the Points Race and failed to finish. He was among two riders who could not make it to the finish line from a large field. The race was won by Michael Tarling of Great Britain, with Peter Moore of America taking second and Clement Petit of France sealing the third-place crown.
Paul will return to action on Saturday in the men’s sprints, along with Njisane Phillip, who did not feature in Thursday’s keirin as he was booted out. Meanwhile, Makaira Wallace will be hoping to rebound from a not-too-impressive performance in the women’s 1-kilometre time trial, with Akil Campbell set to contest the men’s Omnium Scratch Race.
