Out-of-favour T&T senior team striker Willis Plaza scored a late double to earn Churchill Brothers a come-from-behind 2-1 win over NEROCA in the Indian I-League on Saturday and carry his tally in the last two matches to four as well.
Playing at the Tiak Maidan Stadium (Vasco da Gama, Goa), Churchill Brothers fell behind to a 24th-minute strike from Liberian defender Kallon Kiatamba.
The visitors looked to be heading for all three points until Plaza, who started in attack alongside former T&T World Cup player Anthony Wolfe, drew his team level in the 85th minute and in the 90th minute, he netted his second of the contest and the match winner to seal a stunning three points.
He now has a league-best 13 goals, the same as Chennai City's Spanish striker Pedro Manzi. Wolfe has three goals to his name.
The speedy Plaza also netted a brace in his team's come-from-behind 3-1 beating of Gokulam in the 57th and 90th minute on January 10.
This after Marcus Joseph, who recently moved from reigning T&T Pro League champion, W Connection had opened the scoring for Gokulam 14 minutes into his league debut, only for Dawda Ceesay to get Churchill Brothers level in the 37th.
Also on Saturday at Tau Devi Lal Stadium (Gurgaon), T&T striker Joseph played the full 90 minutes for Gokulam but failed to find the target in a 1-1 draw with Minerva Punjab.
Over in Honduras, in the Liga Nacional, Tobago-born striker Rundell Winchester was on target for Platense FC to draw level at 1-1 in the 13th minute against CD Marathon, only for his team to fall 2-3 at the final whistle.
It was the first loss in two matches for Platense after beating Real de Minas, 3-1 in the opening round on January 13.
