Terminix La Horquetta Rangers will have the chance to go second at home to Heritage Petroleum Point Fortin Civic when action in Tier I of the T&T Premier Football League (TTPFL) resumed on Saturday after a vibrant Carnival season.
The match will be the opening clash of a doubleheader at the Phase II Recreation Ground, La Horquetta, kicking off at 6 pm. Later, Central FC plays Prison Services FC at 8.10 pm.
Rangers went to the Carnival break in the fourth position on 19 points after a victory over 2-0 victory over Tiger Tanks Club Sando that pushed them to 19 points, a mere six points adrift of leaders AC Port-of-Spain (25 points) who will take the field tomorrow in a clash with Morvant Caledonia United in the feature match of a doubleheader at the Arima Velodrome at 7.10 pm.
In the opening match which will kick-off at 5 pm, second-placed Miscellaneous Police FC will take on Eagles FC.
A victory for Rangers will put them within three points of the leaders on 22 points in the second position, however, they will have to keep their fingers crossed that the Cunupia-based Eagles can upset the “Lawmen” when the teams square off tomorrow.
In the second match today, Central FC, winless after ten matches to date will be hoping to break the jinx for their first three points of the season. The Central Sharks are coached by former national defender Shurland David, who may believe that his inexperienced bunch has been showing much-needed progress, but their only concern has been the points to show for it.
On the other hand, the prison officers may feel comforted with a game that should guarantee them maximum points. Should this happen, the Prisons team, with four wins in ten matches that have left them in the seventh position with 12 points, will climb to the sixth position ahead of Point Fortin Civic who are on 13 points.
Defence Force’s Brent Sam and AC Port-of-Spain’s Isaiah Leacock have emerged as joint leaders on the TTPFL’s goalscoring list, leading the way with seven goals each. Club Sando’s Real Gill, Eagles’ Kevon Woodley and 1976 FC Phoenix’ Mickaeel Gordon all trail the top strikers with six goals apiece.
