The T&T Red Force was back to winning ways under new coach Mervyn Dillon as the T&T defeated leaders Guyana Jaguars by 93 runs on the third day of their West Indies Four-day championship clash at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, yesterday.
Set 274 runs to win the encounter, the Guyanese started well but fell apart and crashed for 182 all out just before the close of play. All the T&T bowlers contributed in a great all-around effort that handed Guyana its second loss of the season after successive victories.
The only batsmen that showed any fight were all-rounder Ramario Shepperd with 50 off 58 balls, including seven fours and a six and opener Chandrapaul Hemraj who got 30.
Guyana had gotten off to a good start with Hemraj and Tagnarine Chanderpaul keeping the local bowlers at bay. They posted 44 runs for the first wicket before Hemraj fell. Chanderpaul was solid at the top and occupied the crease for a long period. He faced 93 balls when returning fast bowler Ravi Rampaul trapped him leg before for 19.
At 61/2 Guyana was in a spot of bother and slipped further when off-spinner Bryan Charles sent back Vishaul Singh for a ‘duck’. The men from the land of many waters then looked in the direction of their skipper Leon Johnson for salvation. It was not to be as the left-hander fell to Charles for 21 and from then on it was challenging for the visitors.
T&T resumed on the overnight position of 264 for five wickets and Guyana struck almost immediately with Keemo Paul sending back the well set Jason Mohammed for 83. The right-hander fell leg before with the score at 270, ending an 89-run partnership with Imran Khan for the sixth wicket. He faced 204 balls and struck nine fours in his best innings of the competition.
Paul and Raymond Reifer bowled well in tandem and soon after Reifer ripped out Khan for 46, made off 103 balls with four fours. Towards the end, Odean Smith the Jamaican import lent bat to ball and counted a 33-ball, 27 that was spiced with four fours and a six. Reifer the left-arm seamer was the pick of the bowlers with 4/67 while Paul ended with 4/81.
