Cycle club Rigtech Sonics will celebrate its 30th anniversary in the sport on August 30 and will host a virtual session at which its members will go down memory lane on their accomplishments to date.
Roger Frontin, who holds positions of vice president, manager and coach at the club, said despite the restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual meeting will be held, and at that time photos will be shared among the members, as well as other memories of the achievements of the club over the years.
The club was founded by a number of former cyclists, inclusive of Noel and Kent Luces (both deceased), Ian Mc Lean, Frank Gittens and Stephen Joseph, among others in 1991.
Frontin said the club's focus has always been on the development of the young riders, pointing to some of the country's top riders as their products, such as Olympians Njisane Phillip, Nicholas Paul and Teniel Campbell, Zion Pulido, Akile Campbell, D'Angelo Harris, Barry Luces, and brothers Mark and Jude Codrington, among many others.
Phillip, who now enters the fray of coaching, has enjoyed a decorated cycling career that saw him finish fourth overall in the sprints at the 2012 Olympics in London, England, apart from achieving multiple medals and trophies at Pan American Games, the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games and many other meets.
Paul, who began riding at Rigtech, is currently is the world record-holder in the flying 200 metres sprints after producing a time of 9.100 seconds at the Pan Am Track Cycling Championships in 2019. Paul also forced the world to recognise his talent by qualifying for the quarterfinal of the match sprint and the semifinal of the keirin events at the recently held Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Meanwhile, Pulido, considered a new-found rider on the local cycling scene, was the fastest starter at the Elite Pan American Track Cycling Championship, which took place from June 23-29 in Lima, Peru.
Frontin said his club, originally from Pleasantville, will continue to develop young potential riders and prepare them to represent the country at international competitions.
On the rise at Rigtech Sonics are a number of young super-talented riders such as mountain biker Mickel Lopez, Mosa Williamson, Judah Neverson and Kersheve Paul. Frontin said the club has also partnered with a non-profit organisation called 'No Youths Left Behind' to construct a mountain bike/BMX track in the La Brea area.
