Christiano Rivas was the star on the second night of action at the Amateur Swimming Association of T&T’s (ASATT) Invitational meet on Thursday at the National Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva, breaking a 27-year-old record in the Boys’ 9-10 50-metres butterfly.
The ten-year-old Red White and Black (RWB) Academy swimmer was a comfortable winner in the event, touching the wall in a time of 30.41 seconds to improve on Matthew Houllier’s 30.53 set back in 1992.
He was well ahead of second-placed Darren Belfon of Aqua Darts with 32.00.
Jamaican Zaneta Alvaranga, of Kaizen, was the other record-breaker on the evening in winning the Girls’ 13-14 50m butterfly with her 28.31-clocking.
She bettered the previous time of 28.85 achieved by Gabriela Donahue in 2017.
Two records were also broken by local swimmers Asia-Marie Pouchet of Blue Dolphins and Amelia Rajack of Tidal Wave Athletics (TWA) on Wednesday, the opening night of the four-day event which is being hosted by Marlins Swim Club.
Just like Rivas, eight-year-old Pouchet improved on a 27-year-old record with her 36.93 in the Girls’ Eight and Under 50m backstroke, shaving the previous 37.20 set by Chantal Ross in 1992.
Rajack, meanwhile, broke her own record in the Girls’ 11-12 1,500m freestyle with 19:11.56. The 12-year-old bettered her performance last year when she won in 20:39.92.
The swim meet was scheduled to continue last night and ends today with action splashing off at 9 am.
