The T&T Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) has appointed Jerry Legall as coach of the Senior Men's 15s Rugby team ahead of an expected busy year for the sport, despite the corona (COVID-19) pandemic.
Legall's appointment is part of a number of appointments made recently following an announcement by Rugby Americas North (RAN) that the Rugby World Cup qualifiers would take place in April/May this year for both Men and Women.
The appointments are to be made public officially on Friday, a close rugby source told Guardian Media Sports on Tuesday.
Legall, who was an assistant to Felician Guerra to the men's team in 2019, will be assisted by Johnathan O'Connor, while Curtis Nero will be the manager and Kenwyn Davis will be the assistant manager. Nero, a long-serving member of T&T rugby, will also partner with Davis to be the manager and assistant manager for all of the country's rugby teams, inclusive of the Under-19 Men's 15s, the Men's 7s and Women's 7s team.
Micky Browner will also be the kicking coach for all the country's teams.
Other appointments being revealed were the naming of Jerome Poon Tip as the coach of the Under-19 Men's team, which came alongside his assistant Don Sucre, while Quintin Lyder-Baptiste is the manager and Clesan Green, the assistant manager.
Carlton Felix, a former national coach also earned a recall as coach of the country's 7s women's rugby team, with 7s men's coach being Felician Guerra.
Juliana Straker, considered probably the best woman's player to grace a rugby field in the Caribbean, has earned the appointment of an assistant to Felix, while Jenilee Limada and Kerchelle Hinkson, have been appointed manager and assistant manager of the women's 7s team respectively.
Meanwhile, Guerra, unlike any of the other coaches, will have the assistance of two coaches in Kelson Figaro and Richard Staglon, who is a former Guyanese international player who now resides in T&T.
Earlier this week rugby president Colin Peters said local players have not done anything rugby-related due to the coronavirus which had brought many sports to an abrupt stop last year.
However, he noted that because of the closed TT borders, the country's men's and women's team could miss out on World Cup berths.
The appointments of the coaches mean that once the government gives the go-ahead for contact sports to take place officially, the teams will resume preparation for tournaments ahead.
