The picture is now clear and the new President of the West Indies has to study carefully as to what is probably the most important project, the ICC World Cup in England in six weeks time.
No doubt, there will be many persons who may wish to whisper a word or two of advice in selecting the West Indies team.
Although I would have thought that the restructuring of the West Indies cricket in relations to all formats, will be uppermost in the minds planning a course of action of the fans wanting to see the Caribbean win another World Cup.
I am assuming that the other departments of administration like marketing, and a reorganisation of the three types of competition, may all have been handed the details for discussion and the prospects of the four-day fixture, the ODI, and the T20.
Surely, the financiers will have their work cut out for the manner in which the available funds could be wisely utilized, with a significant interest in the development of youth Cricket under qualified coaches, please.
I wish someone could define concepts for a new structure whereby all the Caribbean territories are made to compete in an official tournament in each format before any of the regional squads are selected. In that way, the inform players will be the chosen ones.
I distinctly recall the excitement when the countries brought all the WI Test players to participate in the four-day encounter. There was a certain level of patriotism for each team (of course, there was no overseas player purchase among the Islands). The performances were excellent and this competitive spirit produced some of the finest cricketers in the world.
Of course, that is the era when the WI won the World Cup on two occasions (1975 and 1979) and the players did not have to change their batting, bowling or fielding approach in order to be at their best.
How nice it will be if the new administrators will give consideration to the same procedure where the best players are selected in the West Indies team, because of their current form and level of play and skills.
With the World Cup around the corner, it would be nice to have a few trials matches prior to selecting the team for England.
Right now, the process of selection will be based upon the performances of the past year. This simply means that whoever is chosen to make the trip to England will not be based upon current form with respect to the format but from the memory of when they can do.
There's the talk of having some of the players who were discarded for one reason or another be given consideration for the World Cup.
Skerritt is the Godsend and the eyes of the super athletes would be opened for their places back into the West Indies team. No doubt, we will expect a similar type of mysterious choices and others eliminated some time ago, but could certainly be included for the tournament.
On the basis of that predicament, I will expect to see a team led by Jason Holder, an all-rounder, Chris Gayle, Kraig Braithwaith, Evin Lewis and John Campbell as openers.
Shai hope, Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Mohammed, Roston Chase, Johnson Charles, as middle order participants, Kemar Roach, Sheldon Cottrill, Alzari Joseph, (add allrounders Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo to that list), Shane Dowrich and Denesh Ramdin as keepers who can bat, and Bishoo plus Sunil Narine to concentrate on spin. The choice is speculative. For instance, Hetymer was excellent in the past ODI and T20. However, his performances in the current IPL were far from what was expected. Some would believe that Carlos Braithwaite and Lendl Simmonds should be in this team based upon their performances a long time ago. Their latest performances were moderate. Nevertheless, they also may find the selectors in favour of banking upon the experienced ones. Now, what are their chances? There is a glut of talented players, some of whom are highly ranked by the ICC. But inconsistency has been the name of our game, so we shall have to wait and see.
