Pre­cious Son­ni­lal and Jer­an Bood­hoo reigned supreme at the week­end when the T&T Cy­cling Fed­er­a­tion held its first Moun­tain Bike Chal­lenge for the year at Teak Peaks Plai­sance Park in Point-A-Pierre on Sun­day (Jan­u­ary 18).

The two de­liv­ered quick times to claim the top spots in the Youth De­vel­op­er Un­der-9 age brack­et. Son­ni­lal, rep­re­sent­ing the Rigtech Son­ics Cy­cling Club, made light work of Sa­lome Bay­ley of the Madon­na Wheel­ers Cy­cling Club, her on­ly com­peti­tor in the race, and she raced home com­fort­ably in a time of 13.18.32, a mere three min­utes faster than her coun­ter­part (Bay­ley), who reached home in 16.26.36.

Bood­hoo stepped up mere mo­ments lat­er in the boys’ un­der-9 di­vi­sion and de­liv­ered when he need­ed it the most. Faced with a chal­leng­ing field of sev­en rid­ers, Bood­hoo ped­alled home in a time of 9:28.31 for the gold medal and brag­ging rights for the Madon­na Wheel­ers club. Un­at­tached rid­er Liam Govia stormed home two min­utes (11:31.27) af­ter for the sil­ver medal, with Daryn Prince se­cur­ing the bronze medal af­ter a per­for­mance that came af­ter 13:20.28.

Mean­while, the pair of Meli­na Lopez (Team Cole­safe­ty Cy­cle Club) and Re­on Shep­pard (Rigtech Son­ics Cy­cle Club) added more sil­ver­ware to their cab­i­net in the tinymites di­vi­sion. Lopez, a mul­ti­ple-time win­ner in her cat­e­go­ry, brushed aside Damaya Prince for the girls’ crown in 37:37.30. Prince com­plet­ed the event a dis­tance be­hind her in 47:19.83, rid­ing for Vapour Wake Mul­ti-Sport, but in the boys’ equiv­a­lent, Shep­pard proved he was bet­ter on the day, post­ing a time of 25:31.27, with Ri­car­do Titte (Vapour Wake Mul­ti-Sport), the on­ly oth­er rid­er in the race, tak­ing the sil­ver medal af­ter 29:03.21.
