Kerron Sealy—more commonly known as Sunny Bling—is a popular voice on the radio and a familiar face on CNC3, now he is using his success to support and empower the youths of his Enterprise, Chaguanas community.
Sunny grew up in Homeland Gardens, which is a stone throw away from the heart of the turmoil in the Central community over the past few years.
"In the earlies when things started to go sour within the last two years it struck as in wow, you now understanding places like Laventille and when they talk about Beetham in years gone by with the kind of stigma it would have been."
He said he was faced with questions regularly about why he opted to continue living in the community. But he explained that while things are not good, it is not as bad as it is being made out to be to the national community.
Yet headlines about murders, gang violence, and other heinous crimes have inspired Sunny into action. Now he is doing his part to restore the good image of his home town and keep the area crime-free.
"Personally, I just do what I consider to be my civic duty as a member of the community and given the position that I am in…that is how I see myself, getting involved with the community groups that are already active. So yes, I see myself as highly involved in charitable efforts that I do privately with schools and different people, but for my community, the best way for me to really impact would be to go through the community groups that are already up and existing."
Last year Sunny collaborated with the Dass Trace Youth Empowerment Committee to do a ten-week basketball programme where he offered some of the sporting equipment as well as the trophies and medals and a cash prize of one thousand dollars every week.
He said many positives came out of the initiative, including a foreign basketball coach training youths in the area.
"So within than ten-week period we saw something happen, we saw a little ecosystem of goodness come together."
This year he decided to give cash donations to the NGOs in Enterprise to help with their efforts.
"I decided that I cannot be everywhere, and I am only one human being. I am not a minister or mayor, no councillor, nothing like that, and it is not even a political thing, it is just that I must be able to give back to my own community. I grew up here, we seeing what’s going on here, I have children of my own; I am a father of three and I have no intentions of going anywhere."
Sunny's hope for Enterprise is to see the return of a flourishing community.
