Defender Kyle Thomas of Mean Machine was named the Finals “Most Valuable Player” (MVP) in the Uncle Beddoe Supermarket/Hardware-sponsored Tyro Sports Club seven-a-side football league.
Thomas helped his team cop the $4,000 first-place prize along with the Challenge Trophy plus a replica in the competition held at Gabba grounds in Bourg Mulatresse in Lower Santa Cruz over the past two months.
Mean Machine, who topped Group A in the preliminary round, finished ahead of 2% who collected $2,000 and a trophy for second place and third-placed Organs Youths, who received the $1,000 prize and trophy.
Thomas also picked up the award for “Best Defender” while Darrell Slater of Mean Machine was the best manager.
In other individual awards, Keron Mitchell (2%) was the MVP for the league competition, Organs Youths’ Shane Hospedales got the prize for “Most Goals”, scoring 24 and his teammate Kevin Graham won the “Best Goal-keeper” honour.
The Tyro Sports Club will now shift gears to host its 45 and Over seven-a-side football competition at the same venue from Sunday.
Teams will be seeking to qualify for the “Big 8” as the champion will receive $3,500 with a trophy plus a replica. The next three places will be presented a trophy with second place getting $1,500, third $500 and fourth $400. The first-round winner will receive $500 plus a trophy. Three players between 40-44 years can play at one time.
Awards to be presented at the end of the competition are MVP, most goals, most disciplined team, best goal-keeper, best uniformed team, best headed goal and best manager.
