The pairs of Sadie Torkar and Bianca Perkins (women) and Josiah Jankey and his brother Jeremiah Jankey (men) won the opening leg of the T&T Volleyball Federation (TTVF) Trinbago Beach Volley Tour Under-23 Division at Saith Park, Chaguanas, last weekend (January 10-11).
In the final of the six-team Women's U-23 Division, Torkar and Perkins powered past Shanice Cottoy and Adalia Badroe 21-16, 21-14.
When the tournament served off last Saturday, Torkar and Bianca Perkins ended with a 2-0 record in Pool A courtesy wins over Jodelle Brumant and Ximara Phillip 21-17, 21-13 and Sarah Smith and Kaitlyn Rampersad 21-11, 21-15 with the latter ending second after their 13-21, 23-21, 15-9 triumph against Brumant and Phillip.
In Pool B, Cottoy and Badroe beat Tiffany Chapman and Alika Holder 21-4, 21-13, and Alix Pantin and Lily Tang 21-9, 21-4 for the top spot with a 2-0 record while Holder and Chapman secured the runner-up spot after they edged past Pantin and Tang 21-18, 21-17.
In the quarterfinals, Smith and Rampersad outlasted Chapman and Holder 17-21, 21-19, 20-18, while Brumant and Phillip stopped Pantin and Tang 21-12, 21-17.
In the final-four, Torkar and Perkins held off Smith and Rampersad 21-18, 21-13, while Badroe and Cottoy beat Brumant and Phillip 21-11, 21-14.
Brumant and Phillip ended on a high with a bronze medal via their 11-21, 21-16, 15-13 victory against Smith and Rampersad and in the battle for the fifth spot, Pantin and Tang eased past Holder and Chapman 21-18, 21-16.
The U-23 Men's final went the full distance with the Jankey brothers outlasting pre-tournament favourites Jerome Morrison and Jahreef Miguel 22-24, 21-16, 15-11.
The Jankeys' won their semifinal against Luk Pat and Atherley 21-13, 21-19, while Morrison and Miguel rallied past Darion Sparks and Josie Cedeno 15-21, 21-19, 15-9.
Sparks and Cedeno secured the third-place medal after Luk Pat and Atherley defaulted due to injury after the latter was beaten in the opening set 5-21.
In round-robin pool play, Darion Sparks and Josie Cedeno overcame Joshua Burnley and Shilon Millet 21-16, 21-8 and Zachary Luk Pat and Janeiro Atherley 21-17, 13-21, 15-11 to top Group A, ahead of Luk Pat and Atherley, who topped Burnley and Millet 21-12, 21-7.
In Pool B, Josiah Jankeyy and his brother Jeremiah Jankey beat Jerome Morrison and Jahreef Miguel 21-17, 21-17 and Maleek Metivier and Josiah Lara 21-9, 21-5, while Morrison and Miguel crushed Metivier and Lara 21-4, 21-8.
Luk Pat and Atherley won their last-eight clash with Metivier and Lara 21-2, 21-5 and Morrison and Miguel dumped Burnley and Millet 21-14, 21-8.
In the fifth spot playoff, Burnley and Millet defeated Metivier and Lara 21-11, 21-5.
The U-21 Division tournaments serve off Saturday (January 17) and continue at the same venue on Sunday (January 18) from 8 am.
