T&T’s men’s hockey 5s team is now ranked among the top ten in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) latest world rankings.
The "Calypso Stickmen" are currently ranked joint-seventh in the world alongside Kenya, both with 1,200 points. This achievement makes the Caribbean nation the top-ranked team in the Pan American Hockey Federation.
Poland heads the rankings with 1,450 points, followed by the trio of Oman, India, and Malaysia with 1,400. Egypt sits in fifth with 1,350, just ahead of the Netherlands (1,325). Other notable Pan-American rankings include the USA at 12th and Jamaica at 16th.
At the 2024 FIH Hockey5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman, the Darren Cowie-coached T&T team finished eighth in the 16-team tournament. They were narrowly defeated 7–5 by Kenya in the seventh-place playoff.
In their Pool C round-robin matches, T&T previously defeated the Kenyans 7-2 after a 5-5 draw with Australia and an 11-4 defeat against New Zealand for seven points, and in the seventh-place playoff match, T&T men went under to Malaysia 5-4 in their quarterfinal, before an 8-5 loss to Egypt in their fifth-to-eighth-place semifinal.
The "Calypso Stickmen" qualified for the World Cup after a second-placed finish behind the USA at the Hockey5s Pan American Cup in Kingston, Jamaica, last June by a margin of 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
In Kingston, Teague Marcano was the standout performer, finishing as the top scorer with a tournament-high 17 goals and earning the "Most Valuable Player" (MVP) award. Akim Toussaint and Mickell Pierre added 10 goals each, contributing to T&T’s tournament-high team total of 48 goals.
In other World Cup playoff action, India edged Egypt 6-4 for the fifth spot, Oman battled past Poland 3-2 for the bronze medals, and the Netherlands completed the women’s and men’s gold medal sweep with a 5-2 whipping of Malaysia in the final.
T&T men also have a credible indoor ranking of 13th in the world and second in the Pan American region behind Argentina, which is ranked ninth in the world.
In outdoor hockey, T&T's men's team is ranked 46th in the world, only behind Argentina (5th), Canada (19th), Chile (23rd), USA (26th), Mexico (32nd) and Venezuela, while the national women's team has a ranking of 55th to trail Argentina (2nd), Chile (11th), USA (12th), Uruguay (17th), Canada (26th), Mexico (32nd), Cuba (40th), Guatemala (41st), Barbados (42nd), Puerto Rico (43rd), Peru (45th), Paraguay (46th) and the 50th-ranked Dominican Republic.
