The pairs of Britney Choon and Tsyan Selvon, and Nicholas Williams, and Joshua Persaud will fly the red, black, and white colours this weekend at the inaugural Norceca Under-23 Beach Volleyball Tour to be hosted by the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation at Seven Miles Beach, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands on Saturday and Sunday.
The team of Choon and Selvon are unbeaten locally in their age group after they won two straight titles from as many tournaments in the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) U-23 Women Beach Volleyball Tour which were both held at the Pueblo El Pao Multipurpose Facility, Gasparillo Road, Santa Cruz in Trinidad last August.
Williams and Persaud were winners of the inaugural leg of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Men’s Under-23 Beach Volleyball Tournament held in T&T in August at Santa Cruz before ending in the second spot at the same venue a week later to fellow T&T players Daynte Stewart and Jahreef Miguel in the second-leg of the tournament.
In the Cayman Islands, the T&T men’s team will come up against teams from the host country, Aruba, Jamaica, Canada, USA while in the women’s competition, T&T will battle with Canada, the USA, and the host.
The tournament is being seen as a very important one for the Caribbean teams as it will serve as preparations for the first Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Sea and Beach Games, in Santa Marta, from November 19 to 26 at the 500-year-old Santa Marta Multisport Park, located in El Rodadero, and will feature 21 countries competing, of which 11 have registered in both genders.
Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, US Virgin Islands, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia, T&T, and Venezuela, are the delegations that will seek the top spot in the men’s and women’s categories, while Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Suriname will compete only for women’s tournament, and Curaçao, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines and Saint Kitts & Nevis, will be in the men’s category.
The local teams have been accompanied by coaches Fabien Whitfield, and David Thomas, and managers Asma Charles and Colin Charles (no relation).
