T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), via a press release on Monday (September 22), expressed its immense pride and joy at the recent outstanding performances of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) cricket team and athletes Keshorn Walcott and Jereem Richards.
TKR, led by Nicholas Pooran on Sunday, captured the unprecedented fifth Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 championship by defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors by three wickets in Providence, Guyana in this year's final.
Last Thursday (September 18), Walcott captured the gold medal in the javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Hours later Richards stormed to a second-place finish in the 400 metres sprint final in a national record time for the silver medal at the World Championships.
“The TTCB extends its congratulations to the Trinbago Knight Riders and track and field athletes Keshorn Walcott and Jereem Richards for blazing a trail of excellence to make the entire population proud,” said president of the TTCB Azim Bassarath.
He said the accomplishments prove once again that our athletes can hold their own against the best in the world despite our small population.
“Their success keeps the T&T flag flying high and sets the standard for all those who want to follow in their footsteps and attain international recognition,” said Bassarath.
The cricket boss said that the achievements cannot be taken lightly as Walcott, who grew up in Toco, proved that he is still a force to be reckoned 13 years after he snatched gold at the London Olympics.
Richards whose hometown is Point Fortin enhanced his reputation as a world class sprinter who just just missed on a gold medal on the Tokyo track.
“The TKR showed they had the best team in the 2025 CPL despite being written off by some, and justly claimed their fifth crown and the record of being the most successful in CPL history,” said Bassarath.
“Pooran led by example and Kieron Pollard defied the critics by playing an integral role in the title-winning effort supported by his teammates.”
He commended the CPL for its continued role in the promotion of cricket in the region which generates enormous economic benefits and provides opportunities of the region’s best T20 cricketers.
