T&T senior men's hockey player Teague Marcano is set to join countryman Kwandwane Browne at the English Premier Hockey League club Holcombe Hockey Club.
Last month, the 46-year-old Browne, a former T&T men’s international hockey player was appointed director of hockey and head coach of Holcombe after parting ways with Southgate Hockey Club.
The Belmont-born Browne, formerly of Queen’s Royal College and local club Notre Dame enjoyed a successful two-year stint with Southgate alongside Marcano as the pair helped guide the club back into the Premier Division in both indoor and outdoor competitions.
Browne, who was capped more than 400 times by T&T in both indoor and outdoor tournaments combined across a 26-year international career, joined Holcombe in a new full-time role on a seven-year contract and has also departed his role as Head of Hockey at Mill Hill School as part of his new contract.
During his professional career, Browne, played for Hampstead & Westminster (1990-1997 & 2016-2022), Canterbury (2002-2003 & 2009-2016), East Grinstead (2003-2006), and Southgate (2022-2024)—and has also represented T&T across a multitude of tournaments including the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games and Pan American Cup.
In 2022 Browne a former and Pan American Hockey Federation multiple Elite Team selection was named as player/coach of Southgate returning to the club he represented played for in 1997/1998, after seven years with Hampstead & Westminster, which included the 2019 league championship.
Back then his appointment at Southgate came after he and Marcano ended the 2021/2022 season with Hampstead & Westminster in the England Men’s Hockey League Premier Division “Top Six” competition in the fourth spot while both men were part of the Hampstead & Westminster team which fell to a 4-2 defeat against Wimbledon in their all-London England Hockey League Super6s Men’s Premier Division Indoor semifinal.
Browne is also currently assistant coach to Paul Revington with England and Great Britain Hockey teams having been involved in their national set-up since 2008, becoming assistant coach for the Great Britain men’s senior team in 2019 after involvement across various age-group sides and then the Elite Development Programme.
The former T&T captain has also won the Premier Division title as a player-coach as well as several promotions in both indoor and outdoor hockey.
That Premier Division triumph also allowed Browne to test himself in Europe at the prestigious Euro Hockey League (EHL), where he earned the first win for an English side against Dutch opposition in six years.
In terms of individual accolades, he has also won the England Hockey Performance 'Coach of the Year' award once.
The free-scoring Marcano has been in prolific form since he joined Southgate and finished with a tournament-high 31 goals from eight matches, eight more than his nearest rival in leading Southgate to the top spot in the 2023/2024 England Hockey League Super 6s Indoor Championships Men’s Division One competition, and promotion to the Premier Division for next season.
In his first season at Southgate in 2022, Marcano was named the tournament’s leading scorer with 30 goals, 19 in the divisional round playoffs after he fired Southgate to one of the two promotion spots in the six-club England Hockey League Adult Super 6s Indoor Championships Men’s National Division Two.
These strikes came from every phase of the game and included 16 open-field goals, ten from penalty corners, and four from penalty strokes, and his tally was four more goals than Simon Egerton of Bowdon, while Ammad Butt scored 23 goals.
Following his acceptance of the Holcombe role, Browne appointed Lucas Ball as the men’s 1s manager following Keith Martin’s retirement while the club has also snapped up Felix Tully from Loughborough Students, and most recently England international Matt Ramshaw, 24, from Southgate.
As well as previously playing for Southgate, Ramshaw has spent time with Hampstead & Westminster in the Premier Division and has Euro Hockey League experience from his time with the Paddington Recreational outfit.
However, before signing off his Southgate stint, Marcano will aim to lift the England Hockey League Mixed Tier I Knockout Championship title when Southgate faces Oxted at Southgate Hockey Club in London, England on Saturday (June 8).
This after, Marcano (28th, 43rd, 68th) and Charles Hamilton (5th, 23rd, 36th) scored hat-tricks in their team's 12-0 demolition of Bristol Firebrands Flamethrowers in their semifinal on Sunday (May 26) while Oxted spanked Alderley Edge 7-2 in the other semifinal.
So far in the tournament, Southgate is yet to suffer a defeat in six matches, with victories over Eastcote (4-0), West Hampstead (5-0), St Albans (4-2), Blueharts (2-1), Reading (3-0), and Swindon (4-1).
