Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott was seen running around the field and looking very relaxed after injuries kept him out of action for eight weeks following his stint at the Central American and Caribbean Championships (CAC) in August.
He was part of the Atlantic Track and Field Development Camp coaching staff yesterday at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.
The camp concluded with Olympic medallist and ambassador Richard Thompson, Khalifa St Fort, Jareem Richards, the reigning Commonwealth Games 200 metres champion and Walcott.
Walcott speaking to Guardian Sports said he returned to the grind about a month ago to start preparing for 2019 world championships.
“My job today is just to introduce the children to javelin throwing. We are going to use some balls instead of the javelin because the participants are a bit too young for the initial javelin throws. The main objective is just an introduction so they can have fun. I was on vacation and I resumed training a month ago. My last competition was the CAC championship in August in Colombia; after that, I took an eight-week break because of injuries."
He continued, "My injuries are better now, I just think my body needed rest because of the operation I had last year. My focus is 2019 world championship, that is my goal. I've been chasing world championship for many years now.”
Walcott, who became T&T's second Olympic gold medallist in 2012, explained that next years will be the first time the championship will be held in October and it is a first for all athletes. He pointed out that the championships usually take place in July and runs into August. He said it will be a new experience for everyone and he's looking forward to competing and hopefully, his body will carry him throughout the season.
The top athletes from 50 primary schools were invited to participate in the camp. The aim is to help build a new generation of track and field champions.
The athletes were the top performers from the seven educational districts of the annual Atlantic National Primary Schools Track and Field Championships.
Day one consisted of warm-up and stretches, sprint drills technique, recommence drills and techniques, strength exercises and shuttle races. Day two commenced withstanding long and triple jump, throwing drills, javelin throws with tennis/cork ball, a Usain Bolt documentary and a distribution of certificates.
