Zarek Wilson, Joy Blackett, Anneliese Merry and the boys 13-14 relay quartet added four more gold medals for T&T when the 39th Carifta Swimming Championship continued at the National Aquatic Centre, Wildey, St Michael, Barbados on Sunday night.
T&T also won three silver and three bronze medals on the second night of the four day event to improve its medal tally to 17 (eight gold, four silver , five bronze) for third spot on the medal table behind Bahamas’ 39 (18 gold, 11 silver, ten bronze) and Jamaica’s 34 (11 gold, 16 silver, seven bronze).
The Bahamians also lead the points table with 457, followed by Jamaica (390) and T&T (312) while Cayman Islands’ (280.5) and Barbados (218) complete the top five from the 24 participating countries.
A winner of 11 gold medals in the 11-12 age-group last year, Wilson won T&T’s first gold medal on the second night of competition when he touched the wall in the 13-14 boys 200m freestyle in two minutes, 00.09 seconds.
Bermuda A’s Sam Williams (2:01.81) and Martinique’s Anthony Curton (2:02.21) were second and third respectively, and T&T’s Nikoli Blackman, fourth in 2:04.04.
Joy Blackett added gold in the 11-12 girls 50m butterfly in 30.71 seconds followed by Giani Francis (30.86), and Guyana’s Aleka Persaud (30.94).
Anneliese Merry captured her first individual gold in the 15-17 girls 400m IM in a time of 5:19.29 to beat Cayman Islands’ Sabine Ellison (5:21.85) and fellow T&T swimmer, Jada Chatoor (5:21.91) into second and third respectively.
The 13-14 boys 4x100 medley relay quartet of Wilson, Kyle West, Yohann-Matthew Matamoro and Blackman combined for gold in 4:13.76 well clear of Bahamas (4:16.65) and Jamaica, (4:20.26).
Amelia Rajack got silver in the 11-12 girls 200m freestyle in two minutes, 20.08 second behind Cayman Islands’ Harper Borrowman (2:16.30) while Guyana’s Aleka Persaud.
USA-based Gabriela Donahue got silver in the 15-17 girls 100m backstroke in one minute, 05.09 seconds, well behind Barbadian Danielle Titus who won in a new record of 1:04.60 minutes, to erase her 2018 mark of 1:04.79.
Another Barbadian, Danielle Treasure got bronze I 1:07.39.
The 15-17 girls quartet of Donahue, Merry, Vrisnelit Faure, and Chatoor combined for silver in the 4x100m medley relay in 4:37.55 with Jamaica winning gold in 4:36.83, and Barbados, bronze, in 4:40.52.
Zoe Anthony had to settle for bronze in the 13-14 girls 400m individual medley in 5:22.03 to trail Cayman Islands’ Avery Lambert (5:18.07) and Barbadian, Adara Stoddard (5:20.53).
The 4x100m 15-17 boys medley relay team of Delroy Tyrell, Aqeel Joseph, Luke Gillette and Malik Nelson got bronze in 4:04.48.
The Bahamas won gold in a new meet record time of 3:54.32 to lower their own mark from 2018 (3:56.06). The meet concludes today after which the Open Water swim will take place tomorrow at Carlisle Bay, also in Barbados.
