Aaron Wilson of Carenage Blasters continued his dominance of the National Classified Table Tennis Championship when he outclassed Guyana’s Shemar Britton of Queen’s Park Table Tennis Club to retain the men’s A-1 Division crown at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, on Sunday.
In an eagerly anticipated duel, Wilson dispatched the reigning Caribbean Under-21 champion, Britton 11-9, 11-3, 11-9 to leave no doubt who was the top player on show in what was expected to be a preview to a clash at next week’s Caribbean Championship in Georgetown, Guyana.
Earlier on in the quarterfinals, Wilson also brushed aside another Parkites player, Tobago’s Derron Douglas, a former Caribbean Youth champion, 11-2, 11-8, 11-9 while Britton rallied past WASA’s Curtis Humphreys, last year’s runner-up and a past tournament winner, 14-12, 12-10, 7-11, 12-10.
Arun Roopnarine defeated Everton Sorzano 11-4, 11-7, 11-6, and Anson Wellington 10-12, 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 in the two other quarterfinals.
And in the semifinals, Wilson ended a two-match losing streak to Roopnarine with an 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4 win while Britton came-from-behind to oust Wellington, 6-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-6.
Two-time national women’s champion made amends for losing out on the Women’s A Division title after leading eventual winner, Linda Partap-Boodhan, 2-1 and 9-5 in the fourth set, by capturing the A-2 Open Division.
Joseph also of Queen’s Park defeated N’Kosi Rouse of Solo Crusaders 7-11, 15-13, 11-5, 10-12, 11-6 in their decider.
In the final-four, Joseph swept past Neville Cabie 11-5, 11-7, 13-11 and Rouse humbled Rawle Parsons 9-11, 16-14, 12-10, 11-8.
And in the quarterfinals, Joseph beat Wesley Dookhoo 8-11, 11-4, 15-17, 111-4, 12-10; Rouse got past Musaahib Newaj 11-4, 16-14, 11-7; Parsons overcame Rod Singh 11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4, and Cabie outgunned Lamani Clarke, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 14-12.
