Another match and another loss as the West Indies women went under to England by 42 runs in the second match of the Vitality T20 series at Northampton in England yesterday.
Chasing 181 runs for victory, the Windies women were in the game with 85 runs needed in nine overs with seven wickets in hand. But with the loss of top scorer Stacy Ann King, who fell short of a half-century by seven runs, the team's chances disappeared.
After the fall of three early wickets, including that of skipper Stafanie Taylor, who has been really off colour this tour, the duo of King and Chadean Nation pushed England back for once. While this duo entertained, the English bowling looked ordinary all of a sudden.
However, King's 43 off 34 balls with seven fours was the best the Windies could offer in front of a number of Caribbean fans who stopped over to offer support while on their way to Manchester for the ICC World Cup game between the West Indies men and New Zealand on Saturday.
Nation was needlessly run out soon after for 32 off 20 balls with four fours and two sixes and that was that as they eventually folded for 138 for nine.
However, the game left the West Indies corner very early on as loose bowling by the visitors was punished by Amy Jones and Danielle Wyatt. An opening stand of 67 in quick time put the Windies on the defensive and when Jones left for 37 off 27 balls with four fours and a six, the English had a strong foundation. Wyatt batted beautifully for 81 off 55 balls with 10 fours to keep the English out front.
None of the Windies bowlers looked threatening as far too much short bowling was served up.
With the first game at Northampton falling to rain, the final match will be played at Derby on Tuesday 25 with England leading 1-0.
