T&T's Kennya ‘Yaya’ Cordner scored on debut with Fenerbahce in the Turkish Women's Football League during a club-friendly match against Galatasaray on Tuesday afternoon at the Nef Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
The national striker, who signed with Fenerbahce "Yellow Canaries" on November 19 after spending four seasons in the Norwegian Toppserien League with Il Sandviken where she won several titles, most recently, the Norwegian women’s league crown last month, netted her team's sixth goal in the 7-0 win.
In October, Cordner scored the lone goal for T&T in a 1-1 tie with Panama at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva. It was the second of two international friendly matches for the T&T team under interim coach Kenwyne Jones. The opening match ended in a goalless draw.
The Fenerbahce forward was also part of the T&T unit for the two international friendly matches against the Dominican Republic at the end of last month. T&T lost the first match 2-1 of a late goal on November 26 and held on for a 1-1 draw, four days later in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers which begin in February.
In the derby match against Galatasaray, a friendly which was held for the first time to stop discrimination and violence against girls and women, Cordner, not only got on the scoresheet, but as early as the fifth minute she changed the game after she was fouled while en route to goal, which led to a red card to a Galatasaray defender Nigerian Ijeoma Daniels.
Fenerbahce took the lead in the 10th minute when Fatma Kara Sahinbas scored a penalty. The visitors doubled the lead in the 15th minute when Portuguese midfielder Mariana Pereira Jaleca's shot was parried by goalkeeper Sude Sozudogru but Fenerbahce's Berdan Bozkurt latched onto the rebound and placed the ball in the far post.
English forward Shameeka Fishley produced a hat-trick netting goals in the 31st, 34th and 39th minutes to increase the lead to 5-0.
Cordner's goal came on a counter-attack for the sixth goal in the 40th as Fenerbahce dominated the first half 6-0.
The Yellow Canaries got another item in the 51st when Setenay Sirim received a through ball and entered the penalty box, then finished one-on-one to put the icing on the cake in the friendly match.
