In today's world of multicolour makeup, fluorescent green and pink eyeliners, metallics and shimmers sometimes a girl just wants to stand out. And what better way to do that, than to look to the past for makeup inspiration. One of my favorite beauty periods is the 1950s, and the beauty standards that came to the forefront thanks to the 1950s Hollywood stars. One of the world's greatest beauty icons of all time is none other than Marilyn Munroe, who is heralded as one of the style icons of that era. Other than Marilyn, there is the lesser known yet equally stunning Dorothy Dandridge who, because of the racism in Hollywood at the time, went unnoticed. Both these women are symbols of the 1950s Old Hollywood or bombshell look, which is characterised by a flawless face, slightly arched eyebrows, minimal eye shadow, false eyelashes and mascara. The look is topped off with a beautiful red lip and a beauty mark (optional). The woman who dares to wear this makeup now must embody the spirit of stars like Marilyn and Dorothy, who were boldly confident and sexy without trying too hard. Nowadays, some of today's biggest stars such as Gwen Stefani, Anne Hathaway, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera, have managed to take the 50's Hollywood or Bombshell look and make it their own.
To recreate the Hollywood Bombshell look, you will need the following: Foundation (full coverage), Concealer, Translucent Powder, Matte Flesh coloured eye shadow (based on your skin tone),
White / Champagne coloured shimmer shadow (based on your skin tone), Matte Deep brown
eyeshadow, Brow Powder or Brow gel, Clear Brow setting gel, Black liquid eyeliner, Black mascara, False eyelashes (strips), Natural tone blush, Red lip liner, Red Lipstick & Red Lip gloss
Step by Step Guide
Apply concealer under the eyes to lighten and to minimise dark shadows. Apply foundation all over the face. Ensure that the finished look is flawless. Set the foundation by applying loose powder all over the face. Fill in eyebrows so that they are slightly arched. Set the eyebrows with clear brow setting gel. With the eye shadow brush, cover the entire eyelid (i.e. from the lashes up to the brow) with the flesh tone eye shadow. Blend well so that it looks natural. Place a little of the shimmer shadow below eyebrow and in the inner corner of the eyes. Blend well again. Remember, the look is supposed to be soft and natural. Apply the deep brown eyeshadow to the crease of the eyes. Blendwell. Apply the liquid eyeliner as close to the eyelashes as possible. You can wing the ends out slightly.Put on the false eye lash strips. Blend the false eyelashes with your own, by sealing them together with mascara. Lightly line the lower eyes. Take a small eyeliner brush to smooth it out to look natural and sultry.
Hair
We all "ooohed" and "aaaaaahed" at Rihanna's flaming red hairstyle and we know many women who have shown their hairdressers photos of Beyonce's do as inspiration. But let's face it, if Rihanna and Beyonce didn't have the right shape of face to suit their hairstyles, you won't exactly be searching for their look; You see it is the shape of your face that determines how you look in a particular hair style. If you don't know the shape of your face follow our guide below and start choosing the hairstyles that compliment your face rather than seeking out one from your hair stylist that just may not cut it (pardon the pun). that match your face shape!
Oval shaped face - Lucky you! You can wear any shape and style of hairstyle be it long or short. Still, you have to consider what part of your face you want to accentuate the most. Stay away from hairstyles that hang in your face or eyes or hairstyles that cover most of your face shape.
Round shaped face - Concentrate on hairstyles that add height and fullness to the crown of your head. This will give your face a narrow look especially when you choose short hairstyles. On longer hairstyles, choose styles that are closer to your cheeks with no width. Middle parts are also great for narrowing the face. If you're doing bangs make sure they are swept across or have volume on the top rather than heavy on your face. Avoid hairstyles such as chin length bob cuts, straight or kicking out in design.
Heart shaped face - Any textured chin-length hairstyles willcomplimentthis face shape. Sideswept bangs and shoulder length cuts with wispy layers that kick out work best. On longer lengths, add volume on top. You'd want to avoid short slicked back hair styles and heavy straight bangs.
Square shaped face - Try short and medium length hairstyles that are wispy and fall onto your face to soften your strong jaw line. Avoid hairstyles like blunt bobs, especially chin length bobs. Note to self: middle parts are not your friends!
Pear shaped face - Try hairstyles that would give an illusion of an oval face. Layered looks like the Shag flatter you.So dohairstyles that allow you totuck your hair behind yourears.Short hair should not pass the neck line while your long hair should be kept at the nape.
Diamond shaped face - Try hairstyles that feature wide wispy bangs. A graduated bob that falls to the chin with wispy edges will also suit you.
Apply blush to the apples of the cheeks. Line the lips with the red lip liner. Then take the lip liner and fill the lips in.
Apply the lipstick with the lip brush. Take your time. This is the hallmark of this look and the Bombshell's lip has to be perfect!
Top the red lipstick with a touch of red lip gloss
Use liquid eyeliner to place a beauty mark (This is optional, but a lot of fun. Make sure it dries though)!
To end, dust face once more with powder to finish.
TWO WORDS THAT MAY CONFUSE YOU
TWO WORDS THAT MAY CONFUSE YOU
HYDRATION & HYDRATING
The words "Hydration" or "Hydrating" has been a buzz word in both the cosmetic and Aesthetic field for decades. We have had hydrating creams, Serums, and treatments for as long as we can remember. We know that HYDRA and HYDRO refer to water. Before we define the actual meaning of hydrate, let us look at a similar word that is actually a complete misnomer... the word "moisturizer". Technically there is no such thing as a moisturizer especially in cream form. It was actually a term invented in the early 1960's by a New York advertising firm to sell beauty creams. In those days, it was felt that humectants put into creams, such as ordinary glycerin's somehow "moisturized" the epidermis when rubbed in.
The moisturizing actually comes from within our epidermis naturally. When we are younger, we have two secretive glands, that work to our advantage and keep us naturally moist and supple.
These are the sudoriferous glands sweat glands and the sebaceous glands. Slightly acid and fractionated oil similar in molecular size to the water molecules. Every few hours they rise to the surface of the skin, intermingle, and create our natural Acid Mantle, which keeps the skin soft and moist naturally.
As the years go by, dead cells build up and the skin takes on the appearance of dry skin. Tiny lines and wrinkles develop and the sudoriferous glands shrink or become plugged and the Acid Mantle breaks down. Often this is misdiagnosed as dry skin, T-zone skin and or Combination skin. However, these are not actually diagnostic categories. In fact, there are actually only a few dry skin conditions; ITCHIOSIS, being the main anomaly, it is merely dead skin that needs to be exfoliated. Hydration means inside out not the action of any one type of product. Hydrating is topical, lower epidermal and internal. Drinking enough water daily will help and is a major contributor to Hydrating.
