I see it all the time. Beautiful women who seem to be stuck in a makeup and beauty time warp because they are wearing colours and makeup formulas that are outmoded and outdated. And you would be surprised that many of these women – if asked to change their look – would just shudder at the idea of changing anything in their makeup routine. If I asked the average woman if she was wearing a pair of shoes from ten years ago or a pair of jeans from ten years ago most would say of course not (unless they've gone retro). But, a pair of shoes from ten years ago that doesn't go with anything 'now' would certainly look old and out of date and definitely un-cool. Ten years ago, pant styles were baggier and lower cut.Today's pants have reverted to a slimmer cut and the rise is more natural. Shoes today are edgier; the heels are higher and certainly some styles are dominating, e.g. the platform and the wedge. So why don't you use the same logic and approach when it comes to makeup and your beauty regime?
Here's why you should look into changing your routine
• Making some changes would probably make you look a little younger. The modern look
emphasises soft beauty and healthy-looking skin. Did you know that using a lighter lip colour can take a few years off your face?
• Many new makeup formulations are better for your skin. Makeup now has many skin caring properties. For example, many companies are now putting SPF in lipsticks and new
moisturisers into all their products. So, for
example, ten years ago most long wearing
lipsticks would have your lips feeling dry and peeling. Now thanks to research and technology, most companies have been able to achieve moisture without sacrificing longevity.
• Thanks to the Internet and YouTube,
techniques that were once taught to makeup artists are now more accessible to the average woman. And if you can master some of the techniques you can definitely take years of your look.
• Use the wide array of choices to your
advantage. For example, 15 years ago there were very few companies focusing on ethnic skin. Now, any beauty company that doesn't get foundation and colour right for those of us with olive skin right down to the darkest African skin will be left in the dust. New foundations that have been formulated in the last few years by some of the top makeup companies like Lancôme, Estee Lauder, and L'Oreal etc., have really gotten the pigments and ethnic undertones right.
• There are products available now that did not exist ten, 15 and 20 years ago. Primers and BB creams are a great example of that. Also look at all the breakthroughs in mascara! Years ago mascara was just mascara. Now it is actually confusing because mascara comes in so many formulations – lengthening,
volumising, thickening, fibre enhancing... the list goes on and on.
• Your skin now is not the same skin you had ten years ago. As you age, your skin needs different nutrients and many times responds very differently because of changing hormones, health, external conditions, etc. Updating your makeup will also work with the changing needs of your skin and use the appropriate makeup for the best results. So, my advice to you is always the same. Free your mind and be open to experimenting with makeup from companies you make have never used before or colours that you may have never dared to try. Be brave and break out of your beauty routine and you may just be surprised to see how people will respond to your new look.
