Wall Statements 2.0

On August 26th we explored the use of an accent wall to inject interest and excitement into a space. Today we examine other ways to make our walls talk. Walls can make a statement about you, your taste and your design aesthetic. If you are confining yourself to paint colour and the occasional painting, you are missing the opportunity for phenomenally unique wall décor. You are missing a whole world of possibilities: the possibility to take your walls and your space from pedestrian to fantastic. But what else can we do to spruce up our wall décor? Photos. Yes photos. This may seem pedestrian. But the edge comes with how you frame it and how you arrange it on the wall. A couple weeks ago I worked with Shanti with a collection of photos dating back to her great grandmother right up to her twin grandbabies. We had them all reframed and arranged on the walls of her family room and in the hall directly outside her family room. We did wonderful informal and organic collage groupings. What better place to have your family around you?

Upholstered walls. One of my latest fascinations: a luxurious alternative adding colour and texture. It brings unexpected texture and dimension to your space. Try it behind your bed, in dining rooms, in powder rooms or in your den, for instance. This can be a very modern or traditional finish depending on the treatment and fabric. An upholstered wall can be ultra-feminine, masculine or childlike. Try a traditional tufted finish in silk, velvet or a more modern non tufted effect in leather, ultra-suede, wool or linen. Try upholstering on a panel of MDF or ply board and attach it to the wall of upholster directly to strips on your wall. Source: http://www.jamieherzlinger.com/

3d Wall Art. Multidimensional art can have greater impact than a one dimensional painting or photo. Consider large scale clocks and metal wall sculptures, for instance. With their reflective quality, mirrors take on a 3D effect.  Be inspired by the following stunning wall sculpture. Source: SchapperWhite Limited

Plates. People have been using plates as wall decoration for ages. But the placement of these plates make the appealing statement. They carry the eyes right across the room.

Vertical wall gardens. One sure way to bring life into a room is to introduce plants or flowers. Ever think of growing gardens on walls? This example of cacti and succulents definitely looks like abstract wall art.

Here is another example from a Manhattan Apartment. This is a new trend (to me) I am monitoring. I even plan to do my own wall soon. I will let you know how it all turned out.

Stenciling and Wall decals. One of the latest ways of bringing dimension to your walls. This is not the stencilling of years gone by. Stencilling now has a new edge. Monograms, sayings and graphic art can all be made easy with stencils. Use tone on tone designs for a sophisticated and elegant look or a more fun look try contrast or complementary colours. No it’s not wallpaper or fabric. It is a stencil. Source: www.moldingmates.com

For those who are afraid to commit or want instant results, there are peel and stick wall decals. They are removable and fun. What do you think of this cute wall decal for a little girl’s room?
