Balance. Dots do not have to be on absolutely everything. That's serious overload on the visual senses. A large room, polka dots can be used to draw attention to a feature or to create interest in an otherwise bland space. For balance, remember to repeat the shape somewhere else in the room.
If using on the walls, consider using large dots on an accent wall rather than smaller dots on all walls. As with any pattern, if you want to showcase your love for the pattern, give it prominence rather than spreading it around on everything. The larger circle motif is a very contemporary vibe.
The power of suggestion. Your circles do not always have to be literal. Note how the circles are repeated in the shelving in one photo, an accent chair in another, and the bed posts and headboard in another. The motif can be round but not literally dots. It can be a lot easier in the eyes. Look through all the photos and spot the suggested circles in it
Also, try varying the size of the pattern. You can also use patterns with varying 'dot density'. This creates interest without the risk of overload. Update your interpretation of the polka dot. Use polka dots that integrate other patterns or vary the colours and sizes of the dots.
Manly dots. (Insert image 8 plus Image 9 with caption) Alternately, try the low contrast alternative such as pale blue and white or cream and white. This low contrast can actually be quite sophisticated. In fact if you have the task of convincing the guy in your life to willingly go with polka dots, low contrast may be your only option.
You can also opt for neutrals if you want an understated, masculine look.
On the floor. Yes, the floor presents the opportunity for indulging in your dot fantasy. Scout for rugs or carpeting with your favourite motif.
Or expand your interpretation of dots. Try round mats or small rugs scattered on the bathroom floor.
All surfaces, all spaces. Larger dots look more contemporary. An abundance of smaller dots have a more retro vintage appeal; a sort of ode to the past. Try polka dots on bedding, lampshades, accent chairs, and window treatments. Polka dots can also be used outdoors!! You are limited only by your imagination. Many of us do not view polka dots as an adult alternative.
I hope we have been able to inspire you and demonstrate that dots are a trendy and viable pattern for your dcor.
