An 80-year-old retired teacher was found tied up and stabbed to death at his home at Mohess Road, Barrackpore, yesterday morning.
After Dennis Ramlal failed to answer his cellphone, his brother went to his home around 9 am and made the grisly discovery.
Ramlal’s body was found partially under a bed and covered with a sheet. His brother told police that on Sunday, he tried calling Ramlal on his cellphone but got no answer and decided to check on him yesterday.
Ramlal’s brother arrived at the house around 9 am and through an open window, he saw blood on the floor and his brother’s body under the bed.
When the police arrived, they found the body covered in blood and turned to the left side with the hands and feet bound with brown tape. There were stab wounds to the chest area.
Ramlal’s gold chain and ring were still on his body, but the bedroom was ransacked.
The deceased’s Tucson vehicle also seemed to have been rummaged through as though it had been searched. The house is situated on the same compound with other properties occupied by the landlord and other tenants. Police said Ramlal was last seen by the landlord on Saturday, but no one at the property spoke with Guardian Media.
The brutal murder left residents in shock. None of them who spoke with Guardian Media knew the deceased personally, but they estimated that he had been renting the property for seven to eight years.
Investigators are trying to determine a motive. Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigating Region 3 are investigating.
