Jeial Lewis and Jordan Van Reeken were two of some of the standout performers when the Beach Break Surf Shop held its first event of the inaugural Grom Series at Las Cuevas Beach on Sunday. The opening event of the Grom Series, which is aimed at getting youth between the ages of eight-16 to participate in competitive surfing, was challenged by 18 boys and girls.
There were several other surfers who stood out including the winner of the Under-16 boys event, Lewis, and Van Reeken, who won the U-16 girls' division. In the boys' division, Lucas Farfan and Elton John also showed good skill in their ability with a small but clean surf.Van Reeken was challenged by Lily Stauble, Reina Farfan and Stephanie Abdulla.
In the boys' U-12 division, Ian Forbes emerged winner, while Daniel "Chucky" Lewis, Ryan Abdulla and Farfan (Lucas) were finalists. Then, in the girls' equivalent, Zoe Van Reeken won the event, with Erin Krogh, Zoe Gonzalves, Daniella Coelho and Ashleigh Spiers all showed a promising future in the sport. In all the categories, the children and teenagers used their own power to catch and ride the waves with the younger ones riding the face of the waves and making manoeuvres, which increased their scoring potential on the chosen waves.
Despite the small surf, most of the "Groms" were in fine form with mentionable rides by Lewis and Lucas.Sponsors Redbull, the Surfing Association of T&T (SATT), the TDC and participants' parents were all responsible for the staging of the event.
