Jeial Lewis and Jor­dan Van Reeken were two of some of the stand­out per­form­ers when the Beach Break Surf Shop held its first event of the in­au­gur­al Grom Se­ries at Las Cuevas Beach on Sun­day.The open­ing event of the Grom Se­ries, which is aimed at get­ting youth be­tween the ages of eight-16 to par­tic­i­pate in com­pet­i­tive surf­ing, was chal­lenged by 18 boys and girls.

There were sev­er­al oth­er surfers who stood out in­clud­ing the win­ner of the Un­der-16 boys event, Lewis, and Van Reeken, who won the U-16 girls' di­vi­sion.In the boys' di­vi­sion, Lu­cas Far­fan and El­ton John al­so showed good skill in their abil­i­ty with a small but clean surf.Van Reeken was chal­lenged by Lily Stauble, Reina Far­fan and Stephanie Ab­dul­la.

In the boys' U-12 di­vi­sion, Ian Forbes emerged win­ner, while Daniel "Chucky" Lewis, Ryan Ab­dul­la and Far­fan (Lu­cas) were fi­nal­ists.Then, in the girls' equiv­a­lent, Zoe Van Reeken won the event, with Erin Krogh, Zoe Gon­za­lves, Daniel­la Coel­ho and Ash­leigh Spiers all showed a promis­ing fu­ture in the sport.In all the cat­e­gories, the chil­dren and teenagers used their own pow­er to catch and ride the waves with the younger ones rid­ing the face of the waves and mak­ing ma­noeu­vres, which in­creased their scor­ing po­ten­tial on the cho­sen waves.

De­spite the small surf, most of the "Groms" were in fine form with men­tion­able rides by Lewis and Lu­cas.Spon­sors Red­bull, the Surf­ing As­so­ci­a­tion of T&T (SATT), the TDC and par­tic­i­pants' par­ents were all re­spon­si­ble for the stag­ing of the event.
