National fast bowler Kirbyina Alexander destroyed the Barbados batting yesterday as T&T escaped with a two-wicket win in their opening match of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Women's Regional 50-over tournament in Grenada.
Alexander snatched 5/38 to limit Barbados to 134 all out in 38.3 overs. Pamela Lavine top-scored with 58, while 17-year-old Shaquana Quintyne pitched in with 44. Quintyne starred in the Women's Invitational Regional 19 and under T20 tournament last month in T&T, walking away with the MVP award.
In reply, T&T seemed to be cruising to victory with the score on 106/4 after 29 overs. However, some the loss of quick wickets reduced T&T to 130/8, still in need of five runs for victory. T&T eventually scrapped through in the end to start their tournament on a winning note. Captain Merissa Aguilliera scored 24 for T&T.
In other matches, there were crushing wins for Jamaica and Guyana. Jamaica got past St Lucia by nine wickets and Guyana rolled over Dominica by 209 runs. In a much closer encounter, St Vincent defeated hosts Grenada by 59 runs.
T&T will attempt to make it two wins in a row when they face St Vincent tomorrow.
