BRIDGETOWN-Indian batsman Suresh Raina has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies on Tuesday. The left-hander did not immediately leave the crease after being given out and was found to be in breach of the ICC Code of Conduct relates to "showing dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse". "What Suresh did was a clear breach of the code, something the player himself has accepted," matchreferee Chris Broad said.
"There is a fine line between showing disappointment at a dismissal and demonstrating dissent but on this occasion Suresh was well over that line and his behaviour was unacceptable." Raina, who made 53, was given out caught at forward short leg off leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, after staging a face-saving 117-run, fifth wicket stand with VVS Laxman (85). The batsman shook his head and swung his bat at the ground in frustration before trudging off. Raina pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the sanction.
