The People's Partnership Government has experienced an erosion of popularity as result of its curfew, SoE, crime, perceived corruption, the alleged assassination plot against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and three Cabinet ministers and the seemingly arrogance of some ministers. This was revealed in an opinion poll recently conducted by Nacta. The poll showed, however, that people still have faith in Persad-Bissessar and do not view the current PNM as a viable alternative. Asked if they are satisfied with the performance of the Government, only three per cent answered in the affirmative, with 46 per cent saying no. Persad-Bisessar, the poll revealed, still retains high popularity ratings, especially among PP supporters, with Opposition Leader Keith Rowley seeing his political stocks rising due to his responses to the curfew, SoE and the alleged assassination plot.
A total of 370 respondents were interviewed. The findings showed almost 80 per cent of respondents was concerned about the recent spike in crime and the stalled economy. While voters applauded Persad-Bissessar for trying different strategies to curb crime, moving the economy, and reducing unemployment, others agreed that members of her Cabinet and MPs are becoming increasingly unpopular. The poll rated Persad-Bissessar's approval at 56 per cent, as party supporters give her the benefit of doubt over the credibility of the assassination plot. Rowley's approval rating was 40 per cent. Voters overwhelming do not feel there is need for a snap election.
