The Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA) paid $1,835,806.06 to settle four lawsuits brought against it between January 2013 and July 31 this year.
This was revealed by Secretary of Health, Wellness and Family Development Dr Agatha Carrington at last week’s 18th Plenary Sitting at the Assembly Chamber in Scarborough.
Responding to a question for oral answer which was brought by Minority Councillor Dr Faith B. Yisrael, Carrington said the TRHA settled four of the 19 lawsuits brought against it.
She said the authority faced legal action for medical negligence and employee-related matters.
Noting that there were no outstanding lawsuits to be paid, she listed the payment dates and amounts for the four claims.
“The number settled in and out of court was four. For those four settlements, the dates the settlements were reached are: September 2015, the total sum of the settlement was $271,500; June 2016, a total sum of the settlement was $750,000; September 2017, the amount paid $30,000 and June 2018, the total sum of the settlement was 784,306.06,” Carrington said.
