The Association of T&T Insurance Companies (ATTIC) is advising customers purchasing motor insurance from an independent agent/sales person to verify that they are licensed to transact business on behalf of a licensed insurer.
The group is recommending that customers:
2 Request proof of registration from the agent or salesperson. When you visit their offices the registration should be displayed in a location that is easily visible.
2 Contacting insurance company to verify that the person is contracted to sell motor insurance on their behalf.
When paying premiums
2 If paying for the premium by cheque write it directly to the insurance company or agency. Avoid writing a cheque in the personal name of the agent or sales person.
2 Ensure that you receive an official receipt at all times.
2 Ensure that you have contact details for the person handling your transactions.
2 Ensure that you receive a policy document.
Do not assume
2 That a person wearing clothing with a company's logo means that he or she is an employee of that company.
2 A document such as a motor certificate with the company's logo is authentic as these can be easily produced via sophisticated computer software.
2 A person with a call card bearing the company's name and logo to mean that he or she is an employee or representative. These can be easily created via computer software.
If you purchase insurance from an unauthorised person your insurance will not be honoured and therefore claims will not be paid and you may become liable for any damages.
