Men are abused more often than one would think. Regardless of age, occupation or status, men often deal with abuse more times than they would care to mention. Figures suggest that as many as one in three victims of domestic violence are male. Society dictates that men are presumed by traditional views of gender roles to be leaders. The traditional view of the masculine gender role, therefore, suggests that men should be the heads of their households by providing financially for the family and making important family decisions.

Prolific local artist Jackie Hinkson has again documented the world with the help of T&T’s array of iconic mas characters. To add to his repertoire of the growing 110-foot mural along 6 Fisher Avenue, St Ann’s, this year’s edition of Band of the Year saw the 70- to 80-foot mural, Ah Sailing with the Ship, portraying a sailor mas. With each sailor wearing a headpiece alluding to a notable societal issue.

The House of Jacqui won the Large Band category in the Chaguanas Kiddies Carnival Competition on Sunday, with their portrayal of We From Sando. The band also won the Queen of the Bands and Individual Male and Female titles. There was no winner for the King of the Bands compeitition.

But Hammond “Slick” Bruce believes comedy is the vehicle that will make his messaging stand out in every competition that he is in. Even if it is a serious issue that he is tackling, he presents it in a light-hearted comedic way.

A familiar face to many Carnival lovers in T&T and throughout the Caribbean, Achsah Henry is the definition of a Carnival Queen. Henry was raised in the belly of Trinidad Carnival culture, growing up in D Yard, surrounded by the likes of 3canal, Machel Montano, Destra Garcia and Bunji Garlin. At three years old, she took the road by storm for the first time, playing mas in a custom Carnival costume with Peter Minshall alongside her mother and aunts.
