Imagine if you will, after 17 years, from kindergarten to final-year university, of constant hard work, commitment, focus, struggle, not only on my behalf but of my parents, friends, family, teachers, colleagues, mentors, that in the final year, the UWI has changed the grading rules, thereby effectively robbing me of the fruits of my life's labour up until now.
By literally moving the goalposts after the game has begun the UWI, by introducing this new grading system, has created a scenario whereby a potential first-class honours student will now see his life's work, hopes, dreams and expectations drop.
A first-class degree has the potential to make a great difference when seeking employment, as well as do wonders for one's own self-gratification.
This was not the arrangement we signed on to when we enrolled in the UWI three years ago.
I have no problem in theory with the UWI changing its grading system. My issue is that I strongly feel it should have been phased-in. Those who signed on with the old system in place should be allowed to complete their studies on this system.
It means therefore that:
2 Examinations for final year students for the 2014/2015 semesters must be marked using the previous grading system;
2 the marks for the 2013/2014 semesters must be retroactively upgraded using the same previous grading system.
If the UWI cannot decide how to do this then maybe a good lawsuit can clarify matters for them.
