I refer to a letter published in your newspaper yesterday written by Bernard Quesnel regarding property tax.
In his letter, Mr Quesnel raised a number of issues regarding the assessment of the values that will be used to calculate the property tax and he recommended that the law be amended to specify when the rental value will be determined and how long it will hold.
For his information, the interval at which the assessment of property values will be done is already in the law. It is prescribed in section 9 of the Valuation of Land Act, which states that the assessment of the value of properties, for the purpose of calculating the annual rental value, is to be done every five years.
Mr Quesnel should also note that property owners are entitled, under both the Valuation of Land Act and the Property Tax Act, to challenge the assessments of the value of land or buildings, the annual rental value and the property tax.
