There are different kinds of stress, and the first thing you should determine in learning how to handle daily stressors is whether your stress is negative or positive. Yes, that's right: there are positive stressors as well as negative stressors. Casmilla Thomas, of Westshore Medical, and her friend, Paula Hernandez, shared with us ways they handle stress, and offered some tips on how to be well in spite of the stresses of everyday life. "You may be wondering what we are talking about, when we say positive stress," says Cassy, as she is commonly known. "Most people only know of negative stress, like the tension you feel after a break up, fall-out, exam, death of a loved one or even the hazard of moving house.
Whether it is stress from thinking the traffic jam you are stuck in is making you late, noisy kids and a barking dog, an annoyed boss yelling at you for being tardy or dealing with sickness in the family, you can either buckle under the stress or face up to it. She blushed as she recalled dealing with the stress of a pending exam, and said, "It is best to face it and acknowledge that you are dealing with something that needs your full attention. I've learnt from a good friend of mine, when I was stressed out about preparing for that exam, that once you confront the problem, you can then make an assessment of how bad it is and form a plan of action to handle it." It also helps to believe in yourself and manage your time, when handling a situation requires you to pace yourself."
Some examples of positive stress include the 'adrenaline rush' and excitement that comes from good news, a pending marriage, getting a new friend, going into a new job, getting a promotion, a new place to live or anything that pushes you forward and up in life. Paula adds, "It does not matter what kind of stress you are facing, the best way to handle stress is learning to LOVE and prayer, prayer, and more prayer.... turning to God is the only way to go. Put him first and let everything else fall into place and this is no joke, there are many who can testify to that!!!! Boast in the Lord only; See Christ in each situation, let the Christ in us be the Christ in the other person facing us. And know that as long as you know to call on God and pray, prayer will help you handle anything. I prayed for help with my exams and help came in the form of that friend Cassy was talking about."
Students know her as 'Ms V' and she is not only a great tutor but has an incredible ability to help worried students get rid of tension, worry and stress. Ms V is a good person to seek, not just for private, one-on-one tutoring, help with essays and stuff like that, but she is good at enabling you to exercise Stress management. I even heard that she gives a good head, neck and shoulder massage too. That is another good way to relieve stress and the tension headaches that usually accompany it. Adele Inniss, Principal and founder of SAFETYNET Academy, where Ms V works, gave some of her own tips on managing stress. "Apart from managing your time, and pacing yourself for exams, I know Ms V tells people to start diaries, blogs, emails, and anything that they can use to express themselves, whether over the Internet, or on limes with friends. She would also advise you to engage in hobbies like swimming, hikes, running, jogging, working out in gyms, cooking, cleaning, and so on as these work out the stress from your body. When you get a chance, go dancing! It really helps, and keeps you fit too.
