Police recovered a compact rifle during a home search exercise in Morvant last evening.
A Commando Mark 3 carbine was found by officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) when they searched an abandoned house in Mon Repos Road, which they believed to be used by criminals to stash their illegal items.
The gun, modelled after "Tommy Guns" popularised by American gangsters during that country's Prohibition era, was taken to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for ballistic testing.
Police believe it may have been used in a recent shooting at a Basketball court in the area in the community in which one man was shot in his back.
In addition to the illegal gun, police also recovered 190 grammes of marijuana in an empty lot of land. Police said the "Kush" marijuana, originating from Columbia, has a street value of close to $5,000. No arrests were made.
The exercise was coordinated by Sgt Taylor, Cpl Small and PCs Antoine, Duncan, Voisin, Mootoor, Highly, Marshall and WPC Moore.
Investigations continue.
