A contractor from Santa Cruz was yesterday detained for questioning in connection with the seizure of US$2 million inside a cargo container shipped to the Point Lisas Port last November.
According to reports, around 10 am yesterday, detectives from the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB) and Customs and Excise officials arrested the suspect and a male relative at his business place, which is located near his home.
The suspects remained in their custody up to late yesterday, as the businessman was being interrogated over the illegal shipment of cash. The businessman, who allegedly supplied equipment to and helped finance a political party during last September's general election, had not been charged up to last night and remained in police custody.
The sizeable haul was recovered on November 2 last year, after it was found hidden in a shipment of ply board imported aboard one of the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Company's (Plipdeco) scheduled container carriers.
The container was taken to the Point Lisas Container Examination Station (CES) for further review, where the customs and police officers discovered the money.
Investigations are continuing.
